Fall Semester 2013 Welcome

Welcome all new and returning students, staff, and faculty!  Fall is upon us and with it comes the beginning of an exciting new year of programs and events happening in and around the Sarah Doyle Women's Center.  Our center is beginning preparation for its year-long 40th Anniversary celebration, coinciding with Brown's 250th.  We will be hosting a number of events around women, gender, and feminism throughout the year and during women's history month.  This e-news bulletin will provide you with more info about what's happening this month.  If you're logged into gmail from your desktop/laptop, click on the corresponding Google Calendar button to save events to your own calendar.

SAVE THE DATE: Sarah Doyle Women's Center 40th Anniversary Conference - March 1, 2014

Alternative Childcare Arrangements: A Talk with Kristina Brown

September 11th, 12 noon - 1 p.m.

For those of us with families, the never ending struggle for work-life balance is often made all the more challenging by the lack of affordable, quality childcare.  In the absence of widely available state or privately subsidized childcare, families are, more often than not, forced to solve this issue individually.  Join us for a talk and discussion lead by Kristina Brown, creator of Wild Child, a childcare collective in Providence.  Kristina will discuss the rewards and challenges of alternative childcare arrangements and the politics behind them.  All are welcome.

Sarah Doyle Women's Center Open House

September 13th, 12 noon 2 p.m.

Come visit the Sarah Doyle Women's Center and see our library and study spaces!  Sarah Doyle staff will be on hand to answer questions about our center and its resources. Connect with other women's and gender groups on campus over tea, coffee and cake.  All students, staff, and faculty are welcome.

September 17th, 4:30 p.m.6:30 p.m.

School maybe starting up again, but it's still warm enough to have a lovely time with new and old friends on the Sarah Doyle Women's Center patio.  Light refreshments will be served.  All graduate and medical students and their families/friends are welcome.

Intersections Graduate Student Discussion Group

September 18th, 7 p.m. 8:30 p.m.

Intersections is a graduate student discussion group that welcomes individuals who are interested in discussing the many ways race, gender, sexuality, capitalism, war, nationality and other social forces structure society, lives, and experiences. The group talks about how these forces play out in current events, popular culture, local and national politics, and in our own experiences as students and teachers at Brown and residents in Providence.

The group is open to all graduate students and medical students.
