Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the State Shipments for May 2018.

Here are a few key findings:

  • Total U.S. beer shipment volume declined by 4.5% during May 2018 on the same number of selling days compared to May 2017.
  • May’s decline in shipment volume was primarily a reaction to softness in distributors’ sales to retailers during a very cold April for much of the country.  These cooler than normal temperatures resulted in higher than normal inventory levels, thereby reducing May orders.
  • Several western states, having been largely spared from April’s bitter cold, showed positive beer shipment trends in May.
  • This May was the warmest in U.S. history, which resulted in very strong distributor sales trends. The weather, combined with lower orders for delivery in May, resulted in a sizable reduction in distributor inventory levels towards the end of the month.
  • Some beer suppliers reported trucking supply tightness as having been among the factors affecting their ability to respond to unexpectedly high demand in May. Trucking supply tightness has been a growing concern for many industries recently, as qualified commercial drivers have been in short supply.
