The State Election is on 24 November and COTA Victoria needs your help in the next two months to make ageing count at this election.

People over 50 make up 33.4% of the state population, yet the issues that affect older people are not always heard or talked about by our politicians. Our election platform, Promoting opportunities. Protecting rights. For people 50+, calls for the next Victorian Government to lead in creating a vision for modern ageing in Victoria.

Breaking news

Royal Commission welcome but must not delay action on urgently needed reforms already in train and in the wings.

COTA Australia, today welcomed the Royal Commission into aged care for the spotlight it will throw on the challenges facing aged care over the next two decades, but warned it must not delay significant reforms now underway and in the wings to improve safety and quality safety for older Australians.

Public consultation on the draft Charter of Aged Care Rights

Consultation on a draft single Charter of Aged Care Rights (the Charter) has begun.

A single Charter helps to create a shared understanding about the rights of people receiving aged care.

It will apply to people once they commence receiving Commonwealth-subsidised aged care, including residential care, home care, flexible care, and services provided under the Commonwealth Home Support Program and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flexible Aged Care Program.

Thunderstorm Asthma Public Health Campaign

Grass pollen season brings an increase in asthma and hay fever. During the season, a high pollen count and a certain type of thunderstorm can also trigger thunderstorm asthma.

For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening. In Victoria, the grass pollen season runs from October through December. Take action to prepare and protect yourself and people in your care this grass pollen season.

Seeking women 50+ lacking financial assets

Per Capita’s Centre for Applied Policy in Positive Ageing is seeking women over 50 in VIC for interviews exploring accommodation and care options in older age.

Interviews will be conducted by peer researchers (other older women) and can be in your home or place of choice. They will take around one hour and you will receive a $30 voucher for participating.

If a vehicle hits a first responder, or anyone else at the scene at more than 40km/h, the reality is that they'll be seriously injured or killed.

Remember to obey the laws and safely slow down when you see the red, blue or purple flashing lights.

Victorian Seniors Festival 2018

The 2018 Victorian Seniors Festival takes place across Victoria throughout October.
The Festival experience is all about getting out and about in your local community and beyond.

 

COTA – Information Sessions during Victorian Seniors Festival 2018

We are excited to present a range of free, informative talks as part of the Seniors Festival program. All talks will be held at our new home in Little Lonsdale St (Level 4, 533 Little Lonsdale Street). A William Street tram or a train to Flagstaff Station will bring you right to our doorstep. Our program of topics includes:

  • Climate change
  • Poetry and storytelling
  • Decluttering
  • Aged care and ageing
  • Forensic science
