International Women's Day 2013

Celebrating International Women's Day!

Friday 8 March is the 102nd International Women's Day. Our special update offers a new policy paper on eliminating violence against women, inspirational case studies from women's rights programmes in Nigeria and Honduras and blog posts celebrating the progress that has been made and challenges that remain in the field of women's rights.

Visit our International Women's Day collection to see a range of key Oxfam gender resources and updates on our gender justice work and achievements.

Ending Violence Against Women with the UN

The theme for IWD 2013 is: A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women. The UN Commission on the Status of Women is meeting in New York from 4-15 March to discuss eliminating violence against women and girls. A new Oxfam policy paper outlines a proposal for a comprehensive international action plan that addresses the issue.

Raising Her Voice in Oxfam's Programmes

Oxfam's Raising Her Voice programme aims to promote the rights and capacity of poor women to engage effectively in governance at all levels. Oxfam's partners seeking to promote women’s political participation in 17 countries have had to come to grips with tackling violence against women and girls. Case studies from Honduras and Nigeria and an overview paper share the strategies that have worked and advocate for the sharing of good practice.

Thank you women's groups!

Across the globe, women are claiming their rights, but in all societies struggles continue. Today is a chance to recognise the advances and the challenges ahead.
