Newsletter 8 - June 5, 2020

From The Principal

27 May to 3 June marked National Reconciliation Week. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the Reconciliation journey - the 1967 Referendum, and the High Court decision in Mabo.

Reconciliation Week is a time for us to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in our workplaces, schools and communities.

Significantly, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Bridge Walk for Reconciliation, when people came together to walk across the nation to show support for a more reconciled Australia.

Classes and year levels across the school engaged in learning about Reconciliation. Scroll to the Curriculum section of the newsletter to find out about the learning across the school.

Week 6 Virtual Assembly

WA Roadmap to Recovery Phase 3: Guidelines for Schools

As part of Recovery Phase 3 we are required to implement the following Education Department Guidelines: Parents, carers and visitors may come on to school sites to attend pre-arranged meetings and for drop off and pick up purposes. This should be limited to a maximum of 100 people with physical distancing of one person per 2 square metres and good hygiene practices applied.

What does this mean for Subiaco Primary?
A total of 100 adults are now permitted on the school grounds and we have 740 students at our school. We currently have over 120 Kindy and Pre-Primary parents on the grounds during drop off and pickup, so we ask that parents continue to drop off and pick up from the gate where possible. Support for students requiring assistance to and from the classrooms will continue, especially from the Hamersley Road gates to the Year 1 classrooms and the Pre-primary and Kindy entrance areas.

I would like to thank all parents for your cooperation and assistance over the past couple of months. It has been an unusual situation, however we have noticed some real benefits for our students, especially with organisation, resilience and taking responsibility. Students are being responsible for getting ready for the day, taking care of their own items, and as a result they are showing the confidence that they can do it when faced with challenges. Resilience has improved because the children are now moving around the school independently before and after school, and getting to the classrooms and overcoming problems by themselves.

The relaxed restrictions include:

Parents entering the school with their child

  • Parents/carers may come on to school sites to attend pre-arranged meetings and for drop off and pick up purposes with our Pre-primary and Kindy parents. Parents are asked not to just to pop into the classroom.
  • If you want to contact your class teacher the best way is via email. Teacher email addresses can be found at https://subiacops.wa.edu.au/school/our-staff/. Click on names in blue.
  • The total number of parents on school grounds should not exceed 100. As we already have over 120 parents onsite during pick up and drop off, parents will need to sign in at admin if here to attend a meeting.
  • Physical distancing of one person per 2 square metres and good hygiene practices apply.

Will the health, hygiene and cleaning practices continue? Yes

  • Increased cleaning will continue and cleaning staff will be on site during the day to regularly clean and disinfect high-contact surfaces used by staff and students.
  • Playgrounds are open and will be cleaned daily.

Whist some restrictions have been relaxed, we are still governed by the community rules. At this stage whole school assemblies and sub-assemblies will not able to be held. Our virtual assemblies will continue and have been extremely popular. Incursions and excursions, within the guidelines, will recommence as appropriate.

School Board Update

Our next Board meeting will be held on Thursday 11 June at 7.00pm in the school library. At this meeting the Board will give input and feedback on the latest draft Business Plan, scope out a 3 year implementation timeline and consider the results of the 2020 Student, Parent and Staff National School Improvement Survey. Thank you to the 174 parents, 156 Year 5 & 6 students and 51 staff who took the time to complete the survey. It is greatly appreciated.

Business Plan Development Update

What do our Year 6 students think of our school?
All our Year 6 students had an opportunity to give their input into What's Working Well and Even Better If for the development of the Business Plan. To read their input click HERE, it is well worth reading.

Process to Develop the Business Plan

  • At the start of 2020, over 60 staff and parent representatives from the Board and P&C Executive attended an independently facilitated session to decide on focus areas for our Strategic Business Plan 2020-2023. The group shared their Hopes and Dreams for their children and brainstormed the Strengths of Subiaco Primary. Both align strongly with our motto Giving Our Best and our School Creed A school is not a building but a gathering of Minds and Hearts.
  • The Term 1 CLP meeting attended by over 20 parents  brainstormed Engaging Minds What’s Working Well and Possibilities for next 3-5 years (see below word clouds).
  • Information gained was presented to a working party and our Board to help inform the development of the Plan which includes a strong focus on resilience, social skills, technology, diversity and community.
  • A draft Plan has been presented at staff and Board meetings for discussion and development.
  • The next steps include further refinement and development from our Board representatives.

Students reports will be uploaded to Compass this year. Semester 1 2020 Reports will be available to view/download on Compass on Tuesday 30 June.  For help on how to view your child’s school report, click HERE. If you have any queries, email trisha.bebek@education.wa.edu.au

Silver Coin Challenge

Throughout Weeks 7 & 8 students are encouraged to bring any spare silver coins to school to add to their class Silver Coin Challenge Jars.

The Social Justice Group are raising money for Care Bags which are given to children going into care. Care bags are bags full of personal and comforting items to help children through their first few days away from their home and family. Please encourage your children to send in spare silver coins.

The SJG will provide a pizza lunch to the class that raises the most money.

Closure of Subiaco Library Laneway During Dropoff and Pickup

To improve the safety of the children and families crossing the Subiaco Library access road, the laneway will be closed on school days between 8:20-8:50am and 2:50-3:20pm.

The trial will commence next Monday 8 June and continue through to the commencement of the school holidays Friday 3 July. The City will monitor how it goes and modify the arrangements if required.

The school gate supervision by school staff will continue for the duration, and the laneway will be coned off during those times until the City installs a sign advising of the laneway closure days and times.

Curriculum

Year 5 Reconciliation Week
Understanding the importance of meaningful reconciliation has helped engage our Year 5 students while learning the history of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the significant impact of colonisation on their culture. Reconciliation Week has encouraged our students to think creatively about the future and has made them more aware of the opportunities available to them to make a difference.

Rainbow Serpent in PP
In Reconciliation Week we read a story about the Rainbow Serpent. We talked about what it means to be In This Together and worked on a whole class project. Click HERE to see a photo.

Year 1 Aboriginal Flag and Symbol
Some classes made collages of the Aboriginal flag and discussed the significance of the colours. Another class was inspired by Biripi/Bunjalung artist, Nikita Ridgeway, who made a special symbol for National Reconciliation Week, called Reconciliation, a ripple effect through education. The children used colours they see in the world around us to colour their artwork. Click HERE for photos.

Spotty Dotty Lady Year 2 L9
Our artwork was inspired by the book The Spotty Dotty Lady written by Josie Boyle and Illustrated by Fern Martins. Josie is a Wonghi woman from Mt Margaret (WA) and Fern is a Ngarabul woman from NSW. The story is about sharing kindness and happiness. Click HERE for a photo of our artwork.

Right to Vote and Land Rights
The students of M3 and M4 learnt about the significance of Reconciliation Week. Students looked at how Aboriginals had to struggle to get the right to vote in 1967 and were denied many basic rights before then. They also learnt about the Torres Strait Islander Eddie Mabo and his fight in the High Court to establish land rights. Students included detail about what they had learnt in an acrostic poem. Click HERE to view the students' work.

Year 5 Science
The Year 5 students were mesmerized by Greg Rowbothom's talk in relation to Earth Sciences. Greg is an astrophysicist from ICRAR who is the most motivating speaker ever. Unfortunately he couldn't visit, but each Year 5 class attended an interactive Zoom meeting with Greg.

Greg spoke of all things SPACE. He answered the students questions, and boy did the students have some amazing questions. Greg also gave us an incite into how important Western Australia is with the advancement of technology in relation to radio telescopes. The picture to the left is the worlds largest radio telescope. It is a collection of hundreds of thousands of radio antennas with a combined collecting area equivalent to approximately one million square metres, or one square kilometre.

He suggested some interesting professions that the students might like to do when they go out to study. One of these jobs was a Space Junk Harpoonist. This job involves harpooning and collecting junk floating around in space. Who would of thought? Greg encouraged the students to dream big and if they want to have a profession in relation to Space, he said, go for it. It was fantastic!

Building on Strength in Uncertain Times: In this together

Click HERE to view a video narrated by the Department’s Elders in Residence and senior Aboriginal staff. These messages are relevant to all school communities and highlight the 2020 National Reconciliation Week theme In This Together which resonates at this time, as it reminds us whether in a crisis or in reconciliation, we are all “in this together”.

A Chat with Jamie

All students have the opportunity, if need be, to chat confidentially with Jamie, our School Chaplain. Jamie has set up a CHAT BOX in the library. Students just fill out a little card and pop it in the box, and Jamie will discretely drop by to see them.

From the School Psychologist

Dr Christopher Willard (PsyD) is a psychologist specialising in mindfulness practice. He has conducted workshops globally, presented at Tedx events, and teaches at Harvard Medical School.

Chris and Olivia Weisser have co-authored The Breathing Book, published in April 2020. This is a delightful book on mindfulness practice for adults to read with their young children, as well as for older independent readers.

A video clip, that Chris and his family have made reading pages from their new book, can be found HERE.

Unwell Students

In line with WA Government advice that students and staff who are unwell should stay at home, we are asking all parents to keep your children at home if they show signs of cold or flu-like symptoms. If children become unwell during the school day we will call parents to collect their child. Students and staff should not return to school until they are completely well or have clearance from a medical practitioner.

Reminders

Students Arriving Late or Leaving Early
Parents are required to sign their child/ren in at the front office if arriving after the siren (8.50am). Additionally, parents collecting children or returning children throughout the school day are also required to sign their child in/out at the front office.

Parents are permitted to visit the front office only, via the front gate, to collect or return their children.

We are pleased to advise we have now restocked with the original uniform leggings to get us through winter 2020 and these are now available for online purchase. We apologise for the confusion surrounding the leggings and for any inconvenience to you. The school and P&C is looking at long term options for the Uniform Shop due to the supply issues we have encountered with our current leggings. Please email uniform@subiprimarypc.com.au if you have any questions or concerns.

The P&C would like to thank Kendra Taylor for all her work in the Uniform Shop over the past 6 months. Kendra has decided to move on from the Uniform Shop which provides a wonderful opportunity for someone wanting to take on the paid position. Please email vicepres@subiprimarypc.com.au for a copy of the job ad or with any questions in relation to the role.

Fundraising & Events
Thank you to everyone who has completed a Scholastic Book Order. This is a great initiative to help our kids enjoy their reading even more whilst also acting as a fundraiser for the P&C, so thank you for your contribution.

On the back of Eid and Reconciliation Week, the P&C are compiling an annual calendar of cultural and religious events to be recognised by the P&C throughout the year. If you have an event you would like to be considered for the calendar, please contact Maryiam at vicepres@subiprimarypc.com.au.
