Racism has no place in our University. Racism has no place in our society. George Floyd’s horrific death has rightly sparked world-wide outrage and cast a light again on the injustices and inequalities faced every day by black Americans. Sadly, as the Black Solicitors Network note, these are not confined to the US. The Scarman Report (1981), McPherson Report (1999) and the Lammy Review (2017), show the inequality within our UK policing and justice system. What is less talked about often is the systemic inequalities in Universities in the way that that we teach and what we teach and the difficulties that BAME students encounter in their studies. We know that there is so much more that we can do. It is not just our words but our actions that matter and we must be visibly and actively anti-racist: not merely non-racist, but actively anti-racist. We need to listen and then bring about real change. Something better must come out of this - the worst of human behaviour. Tackling racism is for all of us.. We encourage you to become an ally, explore and take action the resources below: Talk · Check in on and support each other, your friends, family, partners and loved ones and share your feelings. · Recognise that these are traumatic events and that it may well be something that you need support with - do reach out to our support services still active on Campus.
