BE FRIENDLY PDX at Festival of Flowers presented by Whitney Farms
The 32nd Annual Festival of Flowers presented by Whitney Farms officially opens June 3rd in the heart of Downtown Portland! This year’s design, BE FRIENDLY PDX
by Holst Architecture will be on display at Pioneer Courthouse Square through June 14th. With BE FRIENDLY PDX, Holst hopes to raise awareness of the essential impact bees have on our environment and our food supply, and of the vital responsibility we have to keep these colonies safe and healthy. They chose the honeycomb pattern to represent the bee colonies, a symbol of the natural beauty this animal creates and sustains.
The two-week floral installation will transform the Square into a field, akin to a natural flower meadow, through which the participants can stroll. The design consists of nearly 18,000 Alyssum, Celosia, Lobelia, and more. The celebration will continue along the downtown transit mall in partnership with Portland Mall Management, Inc., with a series of floral designs at Congress Center and Unitus Plaza. For a schedule of events, information about on-site vendors like Boyco Foods, Honey Mamas, and
Scoop Handmade Ice Cream, and more, click here.

Houseguest Artist in Residence Program
This June, Houseguest activates Pioneer Courthouse Square with its first Artist in Residence of the 2016 season. Parallel Studio, headed by Ethan Rose, will install “Exchange,” an innovative and contemporary sound and light experience June 24-26. "Exchange" is free and open to the public with viewing accessibility 8:00am-10:00pm.
“Exchange” will reside on the Square over the course of three days, inviting passersby to create their own sonic performance through movement. The interactive design of the outdoor sculpture allows for exploration of the space by encouraging individualized action and collaborations in formation. At night, its triggered illumination transforms the space into a playful and encapsulating congregation.

Portland Parks Replacement Bond Renovations
In 2014, the Portland community voted to support the Parks Replacement Bond, a measure to issue up to $68 million in general obligation bonds. The money from the bonds will pay for the capital costs of repairs and improvements to existing park facilities. Bond outreach identified strong community support for prioritizing restoration of Pioneer Courthouse Square, the much loved City’s “living room”. The 2014 Parks Replacement Bond includes a not-to-exceed allocation of $10 million for all phases and costs associated with the renovation project at the Square.
Information about the upcoming Parks Replacement Bond renovations, including project background, overview, and schedule, can be found here. An Open House is planned for this Fall to share more information with the community.
