Papanui-Innes community update - 8 December 2020

Christchurch City Council

Greetings from your Community Board

Message from the Chair

Kia ora koutou,
Saturday 5 December was International Volunteers Day and a time to give thanks to all our wonderful volunteers for the work they do in our community.
The recent hot days have given us a taste of the summer to come, as well as a timely reminder to conserve water. The Council's new "Water like you oughta” water conservation campaign has some good tips about how to best use water at home.
If you're up for a challenge, check out Council's new Bin Good Game and test your knowledge of what items belong in your red, yellow and green wheelie bins. It's a fun way to tackle a serious issue and help minimise the amount of waste going to landfill.
We've held our last Board meeting of the year and will be reconvening in the New Year to continue the positive momentum in our community. Although this year has brought some challenges, it's also brought opportunities, and I've shared my thoughts on this below. On behalf of the Board, we wish you all happy and safe holidays.
Stay together, look after one another.

Chair of the Community Board

Board Chair, Emma Norrish

Highlights from our latest meeting

Our Community Board met on Friday 4 December. Some highlights of our meeting included hearing from local youth who recently received community board funding for their projects as part of our Public Forum.  Burnside high school students Amelie Cowell, Lleyton Crump, Kingsley Hanrahan and Julie Uchiyama, reported back to the Board on their experiences participating in the Spirit of Adventure Trophy Voyage from 29 October to 3 November 2020.
You can check out the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes  Community Board Facebook page for more information, read the minutes to see what else we discussed and find out the dates, times and details of upcoming Community Board and Council meetings here.

Christchurch Northern Corridor Walk and Ride Day

The Christchurch Northern Corridor motorway is nearly open, and we’d love you to join us for a closer look! Come along for a day of festivities on from 2pm to 6pm Saturday 12 December. Enjoy a casual stroll along the new shared-use paths or a leisurely bike ride along the motorway. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity before the lanes are opened to traffic.

There’ll be plenty of fun activities including a bouncy castle, as well coffee, ice cream, and sausage sizzles. Plus, learn all about the T2 lanes, direct buses, and Park & Ride facilities coming in January.

Penguins pop up at local schools

Three little Pop Up Penguins have waddled into Papanui Library. Designed and painted by local schools, the penguins are now on display. They are part of the Wild in Art Pop Up Penguins sculpture trail which celebrates unique parts of Christchurch while highlighting climate change, community, Antarctica, creativity, innovation and exploration. The Council – through the Enliven Places programme as community sponsor – has enabled four communities – Hoon Hay, Shirley, Phillipstown and Little River – to take part in the event.
