Psychiatry Walks to End Alzheimer's
On October 20th the Department of Psychiatry joined the Alzheimer's Association in their local Walk to End Alzheimer's. Team "URMC Geriatric Psych & Memory Care - Wisenheimers" consisted of nearly 20 department members who were joined by several family members. They surpassed their $2,000 goal thanks in no small part to Carole Farley-Toombs, RN, MS, NEA-BC who was the top fundraiser. 

The Family Lounge is Now Open
The Family Lounge sponsored by Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Rochester opened on November 5th. We were lucky enough to be joined by our partners at RMHC and Friends of Strong, community members, including members of our Department of Psychiatry Advisory Council of Consumers who were instrumental in the creation of the Family Lounge, NAMI and Mental Health Association leaders, and several members of the local news. Psychiatry's Got (Musical) Talent!

On November 8th, Psychiatry hosted our first ever musical fundraiser. We were joined by many department members and their families, both in the audience and as performers. In total we raised close to $3,000, which will benefit our music programs by helping us maintain our existing instruments, buy new instruments and innovatively infuse music into our services. READ MORE >>>

Psychiatry Has a New Liaison Librarian
Darcey Mulligan, MLIS is the new liaison librarian for Psychiatry. She can assist us by: offering instructional sessions about library resources specific to Psychiatry, teaching custom classes based on specific needs, locating and sharing patient education information, participating in rounds and creating and sharing a learning supplement with relevant information, and consulting on databases searches or conducting a literature search. Darcey has recently helped us disseminate materials in anticipation of our MLK Grand Rounds (January 23rd) where Dr. Kobi Kambon will discuss African/Black Psychology.

Health Careers Academy Explores Mental Health

The Health Careers Academy (HCA) visited the Department of Psychiatry on November 13th. Twenty-seven high school students were introduced to various fields relating to mental health, including nursing, social work, research, medicine, substance/addictions services, psychology, creative arts therapy and more. READ MORE >>>

Staff Spotlight

Psychiatry is welcoming two new social work therapists to Adult Ambulatory: Kecia McCullough (top) and Rebecca Holmes (bottom). Both are committed to fitness, with Kecia founding the Rochester chapter of Black Girls Do Bike, and Rebecca using CrossFit as a method of self-care. They recognize the importance of addressing environmental factors to promote mental wellness, and the wide array of services people require to achieve it.  READ MORE >>>

 

Research Spotlight 
Michael Hasselberg, PhD; Jennifer Richman, MD and Wendi F. Cross, PhD; along with a community partner in Allegany County, have been selected to participate in the highly prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program. This RWJ grant will fuel behavioral health collaboration in the southern tier. This is the UR’s first award through the Clinical Scholars Program, now in its third year. READ MORE >>>
