Highlight: American Society For Microbiology Grant Writing Institute


Participate in the American Society for Microbiology's new online course, the ASM Grant Writing Institute Online, to receive an overview of the NIH and NSF grant process and learn the best practices and strategies for developing a successful grant application. This three-month, six part webinar series includes pre- and post-webinar assignments, structured mentoring, and a community of practice. Topics covered include condensed discussions of:

  • The grant making enterprise and the overall funding landscape
  • Tips for successfully writing NIH and NSF grants
  • Developing an Impactful NIH/NSF Biosketch
  • Viewing your Grant from the Reviewer's Perspective

This institute is open to graduate students, postdoctoral and early career scientists and will run from late March to early June, 2016. American Society for Microbiology member price is $150; non-member price is $200.

Brown’s 1st Annual Brain Fair - Call for Presenters
On Saturday, March 19, Brown will hold its first annual Brain Fair, the highlight of Brain Week Rhode Island, an RI-wide celebration of international Brain Awareness Week. 10 labs from Neuroscience, CLPS, and MPPB have already signed up to bring interactive demonstrations about their research and about the basic principles that guide their work (geared toward a broad and diverse audience). If your lab does work that is in any way related to the brain (from DNA to mental health, evolution, and everything in between) we would love to have you participate. February 25 Academy in Context Dinner-Seminar

NIDCD Research Conference Seeks Grad Students & Postdocs
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is seeking advanced graduate students and early post-doctoral researchers to participate in the 1st NIH Research Conference on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, to be held April 28-29, 2016, in Bethesda, Maryland. If selected, attendees will spend two days discussing their research through invited talks, meeting current NIDCD faculty and trainees, attending the NIDCD Retreat, and exploring postdoctoral training opportunities within the institute on the NIH campus.  For more information, please contact Elyssa Monzack.

Postdoctoral Research Associate - Clinical Informatics - Brown Center for Biomedical Informatics - Brown University - Providence, RI

The Brown Center for Biomedical Informatics (BCBI) is inviting applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Clinical Informatics. The successful candidate will be part of the Clinical Informatics Research and Discovery (CIRD) group within BCBI and work under the guidance of a primary mentor, where s/he will participate in ongoing clinical informatics initiatives involving collaborators across Brown University, hospital affiliates, and statewide healthcare organizations; design new studies and develop grant proposals focused on leveraging the EHR to support healthcare delivery and biomedical discovery; publish abstracts and full-length manuscripts as well as present at local, national, and international venues; and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.

Qualifications include a doctoral-level degree (e.g., PhD in biomedical informatics or related field, MD, DO, DDS, DVM, DNSc, DrPH, or PharmD); less than five years of postdoctoral experience; experience with electronic health records, clinical documentation, clinical decision support, workflow analysis and process redesign, data mining, natural language processing, standards and interoperability, and privacy and security; strong computational, communication, and writing skills; and the ability to work independently and as part of a transdisciplinary team. Assistant Professor - Cell Biologist (Biomedical) - Eastern Kentucky University - Richmond, KY

The Department of Biological Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University is seeking applicants for a tenure track, 9-month, Assistant Professor Cell Biologist (Biomedical) position, beginning August 15, 2016. Teaching responsibilities will include courses in the department's undergraduate Biology program (BS) and graduate degree (MS) program. Primary courses to be taught include introductory Cell and Molecular Biology, upper level Cell Biology, and upper level Molecular Biology. Additional courses will be assigned based on the candidate's expertise and departmental needs.

The successful candidate will establish an active biomedical research laboratory and mentor undergraduate and graduate (MS) students. Areas of research may include, but are not limited to, neurobiology, stem cell biology, viral pathogenesis, aging, cell cycle, and cell metabolism and dysfunction. Candidates will also be expected to participate in our new Biomedical Sciences major including pre-professional advising and serving on the Biomedical curriculum committee.

Ph.D. from a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution is required; candidates must also have a strong record of research accomplishments and must provide evidence of excellent teaching and communication skills.
