But amongst the never-ending hype, Aussie businesses have kept on doing what they do best – harnessing technology in their business in practical ways that will deliver value. ASD boss Mike Burgess has lashed out at what encryption legislation detractors, dubbing much of the debate ‘hyperbolic, inaccurate and influenced by self-interest’. “Australia is not the first country to enact this sort of legislation – and we will not be the last.” Robots delivering coral babies to Great Barrier ReefBabyBots to the rescue in ‘world first’ – and it’s not at all fishy... An Australian developed undersea robot has delivered microscopic coral larvae directly onto the Great Barrier Reef in an attempt to help restore reefs damaged by bleaching and other issues. “It’s like spreading fertiliser on your lawn.” $160k software piracy settlement paidBSA says using snitches is paying dividends... A high-profile software piracy case is unfolding in Australia with the BSA awarded an AU$160,000 settlement from a company alleged to have been using 30 pirated applications. “Rewarding informers has proved very successful.” Telstra ramps up 5G pushFirst ‘customer’ connection, first Syd and Mel sites, but still no business gain… Telstra has its first 5G customer connection and early access to its 3.6GHz spectrum, used for 5G – but don’t expect to benefit anytime soon. “This series of network upgrades is also expected to help deliver world leading 4G speeds.” How to turn open banking into a competitive advantageInvest now, or pay later... Open banking is well and truly on Australia’s doorstep. By July 2019, banks will be required to make data available on credit and debit cards, deposit and transaction accounts. “It’s no longer adequate for banks to simply invest in innovating at the edges.
