Important Updates on Golf Cart Usage from Your Juno Beach Police Department

Our Juno Beach Police Department has asked us to help distribute important information about "Low Speed Vehicles" (LSVs), a legal term that refers to street-legal golf carts or golf cart conversions. These vehicles typically have four wheels, are designed to travel at speeds of 20-25 miles per hour, and are permitted on certain roadways in Florida.

Let's start with the FACTS: No streets within the Town of Juno Beach are designated for standard golf carts. Even if registered, golf carts are not allowed on roadways or sidewalks unless they have been specially modified to be street legal. For more details on this please refer to (Florida Statute 316.212: Operation of golf carts on certain roadways.)

It's important that you KNOW the law: Street-legal golf carts and LSVs are only allowed on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or lower. They are prohibited from streets with higher speed limits and from driving on sidewalks (Florida Statute 316.1995: Driving upon sidewalk or bicycle path)

You should also be aware of the SPECS: These vehicles must be equipped with seatbelts, a license plate, turn signals, parking brake, headlights, and taillights, and they cannot exceed 25 mph. They must also be insured like other motor vehicles. (Florida Statute 316.2122: Operation of a low speed vehicle.)

PARENTS should be aware that the minimum age to operate an LSV or modified golf cart is 15 years with a learner's permit (subject to standard learner's permit restrictions) or 16 years with a valid driver's license. Anyone 18 or older must carry a valid government-issued photo ID when driving. Permitting an unlicensed driver, such as a child, to operate an LSV violates (Florida Statute 322.36: Permitting Unauthorized Operator to Drive.)

Understanding the legal classifications, road legality, speed capabilities, and safety requirements associated with LSVs and modified golf carts empowers you to make a decision that ensures both functionality and adherence to the law.

Follow the law, drive safely,
and help keep Juno Beach safe.
