Click here December 2019 Impact Newsletter CPC Successfully Advocates for Our Communities During the last two months of 2019, CPC has been part of a successful effort to mandate training for local law enforcement in the wake of hate crimes. Our team has also been working to add essential language options to the city's 311 service, urge state agencies to collect better demographic data, end over-policing in the subway, and invest in our communities. EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong. CPC Childhood Development Services Celebrates the HolidaysThroughout the month of December, the children of CPC's Childhood Development Services strummed, danced, and sang their way into the holiday season! Paralympian Rudy Garcia-Tolson Visits CPC Chrystie Street School-Age Child Care CenterParalympian, paratriathlete, and motivational speaker Rudy Garcia-Tolson spent an afternoon at CPC Chrystie Street School-Age Child Care Center on December 11th. He was able to share his inspirational life story as a double above-knee amputee through a partnership with Rising New York Road Runners. CPC Project Gateway Presents Financial Aid/FAFSA Workshops in Fort Hamilton High SchoolOn November 20th, Project Gateway facilitated a resourceful Financial Aid/FAFSA workshop at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn. A total of 59 parents and high school students participated in this event. CPC LEAD Students Discuss Intersectional Identities with CACF On December 10th, Anita Gundanna and Tasfia Rahman of CACF participated in a panel discussion hosted by CPC LEAD's South Asian Culture Club at the High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies. Our youth meet weekly to explore their culture with guidance from CPC staff, celebrating holidays together, viewing and dissecting South Asian films, and brainstorming ways to engage the larger student body. CPC Project Gateway Holds 4th Annual Instant Decision Day with University at BuffaloMore than 60% of the high school students who had their college application reviewed on-site by admissions counselors from University at Buffalo were presented acceptance letters or conditional acceptance to the schools' Education Opportunity Program (EOP) on December 10th. CPC School-Age Programs Keep Calm and Play Chess What do CPC school-age participants do on the weekends? Play chess, of course! On November 23rd, 18 CPC kids participated in the 6th Annual Chess Masters Tournament hosted by NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age. Celebrating the Holidays with CPC Asian Family ServicesCPC Asian Family Services, a program that provides multiple levels of services to keep families together and avoid placement of children in foster care, hosted a holiday Party on December 8th with more than 80 children and parents. Hostos Community College Students Sing Carols with CPC Chinatown Seniors Students from Hostos Community College in the Bronx visited CPC Chinatown Senior Center the morning of December 13th. More than 300 senior members joined this event. NYC Deptartment of Transportation and NYPD Talk Safety with CPC SeniorsElder abuse, phone scams, and pedestrian safety are some of the most concerning topics for our seniors. CPC Chinatown Senior Citizen Center collaborated with DOT and NYPD to hold workshops on these issues for our senior members on December 18th and 19th. Hong Ning Residents Have Fun Making Holiday OrnamentsOn December 17th, the tenants at Hong Ning Housing for the Elderly made their own customized wooden ornament to hang on their door. The arts and craft class was a great opportunity for residents to socialize with one another, learn to paint, and be creative with their minds and hands. CPC Open Door Senior Center Celebrates 47th Anniversary and Appreciation Gala CPC Open Door Senior Center celebrated 47 years at their Anniversary and Appreciation Gala on December 9th at Golden Unicorn Restaurant. The gala honored community members and was attended by local elected officials, including Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, and representatives from City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Council Member Margaret Chin's offices. COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTWe empower New Yorkers to represent and to advocate for themselves and their communities because their leadership is essential for positive—and lasting—social change. We engage with individuals to plan and develop their career paths because professional success is critical for economic independence. CPC Brooklyn Community Services Hosts Public Charge Forum On December 11th, CPC Brooklyn Community Services, in collaboration with CPC Brooklyn Education and Career Services, held a forum on a very important topic: Public Charge. CPC Board Chair Veronica Tsang Receives Spirit of Hope AwardThe Catholic Foundation of Brooklyn and Queens awarded CPC Board Chair Veronica Tsang the Spirit of Hope Award at the Bishop's luncheon on December 11th. CPC Thanks Community Solutions Program FellowsAbel from the Dominican Republic and Cholpon from Kyrgyzstan ended their four month fellowship at CPC and showcased their Community Action Project at the End of Program Conference for the Community Solutions Program in Washington DC. CPC Brooklyn Community Services Teaches Parents to Prevent Child ID TheftOn December 2nd, the first snowfall of the season, parents of individuals with special needs came out for a very important topic: preventing child ID theft. CPC Brooklyn Community Services is hosting auditions for the 2020 Lunar New Year Children Traditional Cultural Outfit Contest! This contest is for children between the ages of 5 to 13!
