Demographic compensation and tipping points in climate-induced range shifts
An important challenge in anticipating biotic responses to climate change is to predict the geographical ranges of species in the future climate, which in turn requires us to understand the forces setting range limits. In a long-term study of two tundra plants which, because they are
cold-adapted, should serve as good indicators of warming effects, we have found opposing demographic changes as the southern (i.e., warmer) range limit is approached, stabilizing the range limit. However, we also see the potential for this demographic compensation to be overwhelmed once a climatic tipping point has been surpassed. Thus a period of range stasis may be followed by sudden climate-induced range shift.
