Type 26 Frigates go-ahead

The biggest shipbuilding contract awarded in the UK for many years was confirmed this week with the UK Government giving final approval to start work building eight new type 26 frigates - and possibly 5 new support vessels- to the BAE Systems yards on the Clyde, with work guaranteed until 2035 providing a welcome jobs boost and the prospect of employment in ship-building for another generation.

The UK Defence Secretary also announced that the MoD plans to sign a contract shortly to start building of the last two of five additional Offshore Patrol Vessels pledged in the SDSR, both of which will be delivered in 2019, protecting jobs on the Clyde before the start of the Type 26 programme gets fully under way.
