Rising: the Victoria Harbour Young Artist Initiative
3 – 27 May

Rising is an exhibition of public artworks from students in Sculpture and Spatial Practice at the School of Art, sponsored by Lend Lease. 2012 exhibiting artists are Grace Anderson, Emily Castle, Emma Collard, Tristan Da Roza & Joe Robinson, Millie Francis, Tracey Lamb (work pictured above), Kendal McQuire, Brennan Olver. Stroll along the Victoria Harbour Promenade from the corner of Merchant Street before the end of the weekend to see these ambitious new works. View the catalogue online.

Dancescape 2012
7 - 14 June

This midyear season of Dancescape features works choreographed by VCA alumni Phillip Adams, Brett Daffy, Rebecca Hilton and Prue Lang, presented by second and third year Dancers and Production students. This annual Dancescape production will display divergent choreographic talents that showcase the impressive adaptability of VCA students.

Shakespeare Season
5 – 9 June

This vibrant season of Shakespeare sees Acting Company 2012 and Production students explore the universal themes and rich imagery of two classic texts under the guidance of experienced directors. As You Like It directed by Melanie Beddie is set in 1930s; Richard Murphet directs The Merchant of Venice, placing the production in the style of film noir with post-war small-time battlers.

VCA Animation at MIAF
20 June

As part of the Melbourne International Animation Festival the School of Film & TV is screening a selection of VCA animation shorts from the last 40 years alongside a panel discussion including alumni, academics and current students, focusing on the importance of story in animation. The evening will close with a screening of Sarah Watt’s student animation film Catch of the Day which was to reflect the style of her future work.

Professional Pathways Scholarship Program

The VCA & MCM Professional Pathways Program, funded by the State Government, is offering four $25,000 scholarships to recent VCA or MCM graduates for a project to be undertaken collaboratively with a Victorian not-for-profit arts organisation. The organisation may engage the graduate to work generally on its artistic program or be involved in a specific project that is devised between them. The Program will offer an additional seven scholarships in 2014 and 2015.

New Music Studio launch

Composers and performers of new classical music will receive additional support and stimulation, with the opening of the New Music Studio at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Designed to educate and inspire music students, the Studio will play a central role in a series of masterclasses, concerts and residencies by national and international composers, soloists and ensembles. The official launch at Melba Hall featured Australia’s leading new music ensemble Elision.

3-day Acting Intensive in Benalla
4 - 6 July

Performing arts professionals from the VCA will conduct a 3-day Acting Intensive workshop in Benalla this July, in partnership with Goulburn Regional Academy of Dramatic Arts. The free-of-charge workshops are open to senior secondary students, young adults in local theatre and youth groups, local performing arts TAFE students, teachers and youth workers from the north-east and central region of Victoria

Drama and singing teachers, actors, directors and singers are all encouraged to attend an information evening about the Postgraduate Certificate in Voice Studies

Focus on MCM: Thursday 7 June, 7.00pm
Students considering studying at the MCM are invited to attend an information evening about our Bachelor of Music, the audition process and how to apply. Ask questions and learn more about the program from our teaching staff and current students.

Opera XS at the Malthouse

A six-day opera mini-festival featuring works by Victorian Opera, Short Black Opera Company, Chamber Made Opera and Rawcus. Deborah Cheetham presents a new song cycle based on Paul Keating’s landmark 1992 address in Redfern Park. Richard Gill and Casey Bennetto team up with MCM Opera students for In The Beginning Was The Word.
