In an interview Sunday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison pledged to take a proposal for a royal commission into the bushfire crisis to his Cabinet.
Already, however, he’s getting push-back from those who don’t think another bushfire inquiry is needed.
Just yesterday, the United Firefighters Union of Australia urged the PM to drop the idea and instead set up an audit of all existing bushfire recommendations that haven’t been implemented.
Fire ecology and management expert Kevin Tolhurst agrees. According to his research, there have been 57 formal public inquiries, reviews and royal commissions related to bushfires and fire management since 1939.
He’s given expert evidence to at least seven of them, including the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.
Tolhurst believes there’s a better use of government time and money – developing a comprehensive and sustainable fire management strategy for the country.
Another royal commission, he says, will only reiterate what we’ve known for decades.

Many of the recommendations of previous inquiries and reviews have yet to be implemented. What we need is a better fire and land management strategy – not another royal commission.
