Double pass to Dave Graney this Sunday at Mojos up for grabs..
Tune in to RTRFM's Out To lunch program here & now presented by Cool Perth Nights creator Andrew Ryan - while you're checking this week's newsletter.
Amber Fresh has really done it this time. Incorporating 'interesting' dreams about band members in her most personal of live music reviews, read it aloud to a friend, it's THAT good ...
Tahlia Palmer is quite close with the proprieter of a new Melbourne record store - she's provided direct contacts for Perth bands to get their music stocked at Fitzroy's new music shop Broken Glass Records. Smashing : p
Lyndon Blue has wriiten possibly the best live music review ever. Balam Acab - who he caught last week in Paris - was then playing Bakery the day he returned to Perth. As he says what are the chances. Do read this.
First few to respond here pick up a double pass to Dave Graney at Mojos, happening this Sunday. Cool Perth Nights aren't too hip, nor are you & nor is Dave Graney, baby. Perhaps we'll seeya there.
In anycase, have a good week!

Pond, Sonpsilo Circus & Tusk @ The Norfolk Basement, Thursday 16 Feb 2012
I had a rude dream with Nick Allbrook in it the night before the show. Maybe it was because he was the last person I saw before I went to bed that night, but I think it's also because he has animal magnetism and you can't deny it. We've discussed playing one another in each other's biopics, but of course I'm not ever going to have a biopic made of me, but Nick just might. He is a special boy, and with his band on Thursday night, he did very special things. Yes, it's true, Tusk were reasonably energetic, and have beauty and human loveliness on their sides, and Sonpsilo Circus know their way round their instruments, and had everything polished in a sweet way, and have a redhead...

ON BACKYARD MUSIC, COMMUNITY SOLIDARITY, AND A RECORD STORE OPENING
The music industry right now has arrived at an interesting chiasma, at times both exciting and frustrating. Record stores all over the world are shutting their doors, unable to compete with online downloads of music; while independent artists are finding broader audiences for their work by taking advantage of the invention of websites like Facebook and Soundcloud. Musicians have always had to struggle with finding the right audience, finding validation for their work, and being satisfied by it all… and it is at this intersection of digital and analogue that we have the next generation of musicians and music lovers, ready to accept the challenges that come with living for what you love at a time when what you love is more seemingly disposable than ever.

BALAM ACAB (AGAIN!) & MORE @ THE BAKERY, FRIDAY FEB 17
The lighting on the Airbus A380 dims to a soft amber glow. The environment simulation control panel calls it ‘SUNSET.’ I sit upright and alert, wedged between two waspish Russians and a tray table. Despite nearly an entire day in the sky without sleep I’m wide awake, restless. read more

Force Majeure ft: DESIGNER DRUGS
at ambar nightclub, perth
Designer Drugs (Michael Vincent Patrick and Theodore Paul Nelson) lead lifestyles of the rich and famous, but are really just poor boys who love helicopters and pop banger music. On this, their second tour of Australia, they're set to show us why they are amongst some of the most in demand DJs, producers and remixers in the game, clocking up over 300,000 air miles in the last 12 months.
These gents know how to saddle sounds up against each other - punishing electro-industrial punk, grinding, pounding beats and contrasting pop vocals smash up alongside (non-Jersey Shore-esque) fist-pumping anthems and classic electro-funk.
DJs: DESIGNER DRUGS (NYC), D-Funk (Syd), Philly Blunt, Jus Haus?, The Tape Heads. Tickets: $25+BF. Available from Moshtix, Moshtix Outlets and from the Boomtick SHOP.

Ensemble Formidable // Joe Black Trio
at clancy's, freo
Come down to Clancy's Freo this Friday to see 2 of WA's best in action! Musically dextrous jazz rockers JOE BLACK TRIO pluck and hit their way through a diverse, stripped-down landscape of meandering Balkan melodies, dusty old swing tunes and songs sung straight from the heart. Never letting chops stand in front of a good tune, the three girls get your brain moving while you're dancing. Barely squeezing onto stage after them is ENSEMBLE FORMIDABLE, Freo's newest 10-piece dancefloor doof device. Sounding like Django and Zappa getting down to Skrillex, they use the power of chickens to create a swinging, heaving 1940's Parisian rave. Free entry from 8pm. Friday Feb 24.

SUNDAY february 26
Dave Graney
at mojos bar, north fremantle
Sunday, February 26, While in town to play at the Perth Writers' Festival, maverick Australian songwriter
Dave Graney will be stopping by Mojo's for a solo show. Graney is one of Australia's great cult songwriters. Warming you up for him will be cabaret showman Tomas Ford in an equally rare acoustic outing. Soul sister Odette Mercy, who you'll know from her band Odette Mercy & The Soul Atomics, will croon her way through an organ-led set. If you haven't seen Adam Brown you're missing out. Think Tom Waits via Jamie Lidell and you're somewhere in the area of the fun you can expect when he hits the stage. Entry is $15 from 6pm.

Tin Pan Orange
at mojos bar
Monday, March 5, Come and say farewell to Tin Pan Orange before they head off to Canada for Spring. This will be an intimate Mojos Bar show and we're pleased to announce that Jordie Lane (VIC) will be opening the night.
Six-foot frontwoman for Tin Pan Orange, Emily Lubitz twirls her flaming red hair out across a complex and original musical creation, in which virtuoso instrumental performances and pulsating rhythms merge to form a wholly unique sound. Imagine Edith Piaf in the body of Mrs Jessica Rabbit, wandering through a landscape of suburban fairy tales and electric static clouds. Guitarist Jesse Lubitz thumps up dust from the floor of the stage, the drums rumble, the organ whirrs, and up over the top of everything floats the prodigal Alex Burkoy’s achingly sad violin.
Since their early days as Australian folk darlings, brother-and-sister duo Tinpan Orange have evolved into a dizzyingly original musical force. Still evident is the lush songcraft and lyrical depth for which they are renowned, but the landscape in which the songs are set has shifted.
Presale tickets are $17+bf thru www.heatseeker.com.au or $20 on the night from 8pm.
