Editor's note

In recent years, retreating glaciers have revealed one of the most pristine environments on Earth, the fjords of the Western Antarctic Peninsula. A concern in itself, researchers have now found that this untouched ecosystem has been contaminated by microplastics, to a level similar to open waters near big civilisations. The global team behind the research explain what this means for the marine ecosystem.

Checking the chromosomes of embryos for abnormalities before implanting them using IVF is a contested area of fertility treatment. Some experts claim that the procedure – known as PGT-A – is not very successful. But Darren Griffin and colleagues argue that, in the right hands and with the right patients, it can help to increase the chance of pregnancy and the birth of a healthy child.

Streaming giant Netflix has piled on a few million more global subscribers, according to its latest results. With showstopping original content like Stranger Things, the California-based company has pioneered a path away from sports rights and bought-in films. Yet, as Martin Friesl writes, the future looks daunting against new competition. Here’s what Netflix must do to stay ahead of the pack.

France may have won the World Cup but their performance was still some way short of Brazil in 1970 – statistician Craig Anderson’s analysis shows who’s top and bottom of the league table of cup winners. Croatia, meanwhile, may have lost the final but they won unprecedented exposure for their small country. Wasim Ahmed reports on a nation that went viral. And Russia can pat itself on the back for a great tournament but, as David White reports, opposition activists in the country worry things will soon be back to normal.
