In recent years, retreating glaciers have revealed one of the most pristine environments on Earth, the fjords of the Western Antarctic Peninsula. A concern in itself, researchers have now found that this untouched ecosystem has been contaminated by microplastics, to a level similar to open waters near big civilisations. The global team behind the research explain what this means for the marine ecosystem.

Croatia, meanwhile, may have lost the final but they won unprecedented exposure for their small country. Wasim Ahmed reports on a nation that went viral. And Russia can pat itself on the back for a great tournament but, as David White reports, opposition activists in the country worry things will soon be back to normal.
