Welcome to our network!
Welcome to the first edition of the new ReachOut Pro newsletter! Back by popular demand, we are reinvigorating the newsletter with a focus on highlighting the latest developments from the ReachOut Pro professional network, and bringing you the latest news from our partners in the young people, technology and mental health sector! This new newsletter will be a monthly summary of the content and opportunities that will best help you use technology to support the young people you work with.
For the unfamiliar or the rusty, ReachOutPro.com.au provides health care professionals with information and advice on a range of technologies and online resources that can be used to enhance the effectiveness of psychosocial support and mental health care provided to young people.
ReachOut Pro is a component of the ReachOut.com youth mental health program - an anonymous, 24/7 online mental health service that helps over 400,000 young people get through tough times by providing information, stories and a support network of other young people, and which helps to promote connection with professional support services.

Connecting Our Worlds - New professional development resources on using technology with young people
Looking to develop your knowledge of young people’s engagement with technology, or curious about how to use e-health interventions and safe online spaces to complement your practice? In recent months, ReachOut Pro published the ReachOut Pro Education Module – Connecting Our Worlds, a professional development initiative to assist health care professionals, youth workers, and those working in health promotion to better engage with young people through the use of technology. The module is aimed at providing a basic understanding of the benefits of technology, with some introductory “how to” exercises and practical suggestions for using technology in your practice.
“Understanding the nature of young people's relationship with technology; how they use it to communicate, how they engage and relate through technology, and the frequency of such use, is important in understanding how to facilitate help seeking behaviour and connecting with those young people in need.”
- Professor Helen Herrman, Orygen Youth Health Research Centre, Centre for Youth Mental Health, University of Melbourne

Coming up on ReachOut.com - How do you deal with stress?
October can be a stressful time for young people, with the onset of exams and the life changes that inevitably occur as the year comes to an end. Encourage the young people you work with to share their ways of coping with stress, and to connect with a community of support during this tough time. From October and throughout November, ReachOut.com will be running a youth-led stress campaign that invites young people to share their stress busting tips and ideas via Facebook, and to participate in online discussions on ReachOut.com around dealing with stress.
To be notified when the campaign begins, and to get access to the latest updates about new articles, discussions or tips for dealing with stress, encourage the young people you are working with to follow the ReachOut.com Facebook page.

Research finds young people are smarter and safer online than adults assume
Have you heard about the Cooperative Research Centre for Young People, Technology and Wellbeing? Research conducted by Inspire, University of Western Sydney and Murdoch University and released by YAW-CRC earlier this year revealed young people were better equipped to deal with online risk than adults assumed, as well as demonstrating that social networking can provide significant benefits for young people - helping them to build relationships with the world around them and increasing their sense of community and belonging.
