Hi there,

The surreal images coming out of the United States this week – with the San Francisco skyline, among others, painted brilliant orange by raging wildfires – will be scarily familiar to many Australians. 

Our latest fire season was a form of hell on earth and there have been plenty of warnings to expect more of the same as hotter temperatures and more extreme, intense weather patterns, wreak havoc.

New technologies, however, are offering some hope for better prediction and targeted response to threats. They’ll never hold all the answers – this year, as in every season before, we’ll be relying on the hard work, and bravery, of firefighters to protect our lands, homes and lives – but here’s hoping they can help deploy scarce resources better and get fires under control quicker.
