LAW SCHOOL NEWSDear all, We hope that you have had a thoroughly enjoyable reading week. The upcoming weeks will see additional workshops on personal, professional and people skills action planning, alongside many other events and workshops. Make sure that you regularly check your timetables, as things are running slightly differently in the run up to the trials. We have lots of upcoming events that will be occurring this term, so make sure that you pencil all the dates in your diary so you don't forget anything! Best wishes, The Law & Business Programmes Team Law Lab The format of Law Lab will be slightly different following reading week. Every week you must check the newsletter on the Friday as it will contain the topics that you will be discussing in Law Lab on the Monday. This will allow you to think about your responses to specific events in advance and for you to research each topic accordingly. You will continue to be told about the week's upcoming events in Law Lab to remind you of any events that you might have forgotten. Following on from the change in room to the Exchange Red, Law Lab will provide tea, coffee and biscuits every week. This week Nicky Cockesdge, the Education Support Administrator for Law, will be attending Law Lab to discuss the different information points that should be utilised when you have an issue outside of the academic content of the course. Information on Placements There will be a session on industrial and professional placements on the 13th November between 12:00-13:00 in PL Lecture 1. This session will discuss what completing a placement would involve, how long the placement must be, why you should do it, what you would gain from the experience and important FAQ's. Mooting If you are interested in being involved in the inaugural mooting session which will be held on the 9th and 10th December, then please email flamankmooting@gmail.com with the role that you would like to be: barrister, solicitor or scribe. The moot will be on a criminal law case. You have until the 8th November to send in your name and role. There are 22 roles available and each position will be drawn from a ballot to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity. Please don't forget that there is a 'How to Moot' session on 8th November in TH Old Chapel Lecture Theatre between 15:00-17:00. This session will now be lead by Christian Waterfield. Christian is a trained barrister having completed his BPTC in 2016. He has regularly competed successfully in Mooting and was a finalist in the Pallant Chambers Moot (2018), Guildhall Chambers (2016) and Eversheds Moot (2008). Christian will be a brilliant person to gain advice and information from on how mooting works. The Flamank Mooting Handbook is available on ELE under the Flamank tile, this handbook contains lots of useful information on what mooting is and how to moot, so make sure that you have a read prior to the 8th. Upcoming News and Events SU Sustainability Week The 4th-8th November is sustainability week here on campus. This week will see a variety of sessions being put on including, bulb planting and bee bombs, donkeys on campus, guest speakers, plus a veggie & vegan menu in The Stannary, a sustainable business and society fayre, and a Presidents Big Quiz. Click on this link to find out more. Study and Work Abroad Fair This event will be held on the 6th November from 12:00-14:30 in the Upper Floor of the Exchange. This is an excellent opportunity to talk to students who have studied and worked abroad and their recommendations. Click here to find out more. Aspiring Solicitors: CV and Application Workshop Make sure that you sign up to the Aspiring Solicitor Workshop on the 13th November from 13:00-14:30 in Seminar Green, The Exchange. This will be a brilliant opportunity to enhance your CV and enhance your understanding of what law firms expect in your applications. This year the winning essay will receive £250. Any person regardless of age, experience, qualifications or place of residence may submit an essay, provided the candidate has never previously had work published in a learned journal, or in, or as a non-fiction book. Essays can be on any topic relating to Women and the Law. They must not exceed 5,000 words in length and must be typed in English and double-spaced on A4 paper. The following are a list of regulations that must be abided by when entering the competition: i) The essay should not be submitted in any form of binder. ii) A title, the name, address, and email address/telephone number of the candidate, and brief details of present employment or courses of study must be included. iii) Information as to whether the essay was specially written for the competition or was, for example, also submitted as an undergraduate dissertation, should be provided. iv) Please state where the publicity for the competition was seen. v) An essay that has already been submitted as a dissertation or as coursework will be accepted but please ensure that tutor's comments and marks have been removed from the copy submitted, and the work should be re-read to check its suitability for submission. vi) Essays should include a bibliography. Register to Vote You have until the 26th November to register to vote for the upcoming general election which is on the 12th December. You can have a dual registration which means that you are registered both here and at your home address, this means that once you leave university you will not need to re-register at your home address. You also have until the 26th November to register to vote by proxy and through a postal vote. For most of you this will be your first vote in how the country is governed, make sure that you have your say and that you register today!
