SUSIE HAS A HULL LOTTA LOVE FOR MICROCANNULAS At Hull Aesthetics, we've always taken pride in delivering a natural, more youthful look for our patients, but we are always looking for ways to improve our patient's overall experience-especially with fillers. Unfortunately, many of our patients have had to contend with the discomfort and bruising that comes with these injections and even though they love their results, they aren't really thrilled with the recovery that often ensues for days to follow. Well, I've got some great news ladies. Microcannulas are becoming increasingly popular and it is something our injection team has incorporated into our practice. Microcannulas are thin, flexible and have a rounded, blunt tip. This means nerves and blood vessels are simply pushed out of the way instead of being traumatized or nicked...which also leans toward less pain and bruising! One more positive note about microcannulas, they only need a few entry points to treat the entire lower face. The positive response from our patients has been exciting to hear. If you have been reluctant to do fillers due to pain or bruising, it’s time to reevaluate your options. Microcannulas can open up a whole new world of possibilities. Call today for your complimentary consultation or ask for the microcannula at your next scheduled appointment. We are happy to announce that we have a new Nurse Injector, Alex Cook, RN. Alex holds both a degree in Nursing and a BA in Psychology from Missouri Southern State University. As a social worker for a hospital in Neosho, Missouri, Alex developed a passion for caregiving in a medical setting. In 2007, she graduated with an ADN in Nursing from Crowder College and in the same year began her Nursing career as ICU nurse at Freeman Hospital in Neosho. From 2010-2011, she worked at Northwest Health in Bentonville, Arkansas on the cardiac stepdown unit and continued her career working with cardiovascular patients from 2011-2018 in the Cardiac Rehab facility. Alex’s extensive background in the medical field, as well as her desire to help her patients feel better on the inside and out, led her to begin a new career as a nurse injector with Hull Aesthetics. Alex moved to Northwest Arkansas in 2016, and enjoys exploring the diverse and exciting community with her daughter, Foster and fiancé, Brandon. A lover of anything with fur and four legs, Alex’s caring and gentle touch extends to her many beloved pets: Jax, Boze, Mittens, and Baby. She adores spending time with her awesome family and friends, traveling to new places, and meeting new people. LIPS 101 By: Susie Reed, RN, CANS Almost everyone knows that lips are one of my favorite things to treat. Each lip is unique so there is no cookie-cutter approach. Each patient's goal is different, so each treatment is customized and I get to use my artistry to create the perfect lips for that person. Here are a few of the things I hear when people tell me what they want for their lips: • I want to smooth the lips As you can see, patient's goals vary significantly. I always tell my patients, it is never a compliment when someone asks you who does your lips, because they obviously look done. Don't get me wrong, I want you to get compliments on your lips but because they look natural on you. I just had a patient come in this morning and she said she has received several compliments on her lips. She was doing a photo shoot and the makeup artist complimented her lips. She admitted they were "enhanced" recently and the makeup artist said I would have never known. This is what I love to hear! Thinking about getting lip injections? Here I will share my insider tips on what you should know before getting lip injections. 1. Like an artist with paint, every injector has their favorite product they like to use. The easiest and most natural temporary filler is hyaluronic acid (HA) such as the Restylane and Juvederm family of fillers. Each has unique qualities to address a variety of different concerns with the lips. Your injector will guide you to the best product for you. Some specific fillers that may be used in the lips include Belotero, Restylane and Restylane Silk, Juvederm, Volbella and Vollure. 2. You can reverse HA fillers if you do not like how your lips turn out. Because HA is not permanent, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can be injected to dissolve the filler if you are unhappy with the results. Other permanent fillers, while tempting, are not reversible and little can be done to fix them. 3. It can cost anywhere from $500-$2000 to get your lips done, depending on the injector's skills, region you live in, and the amount of filler needed to correct your concerns. One of the biggest things that people often do not realize with lip enhancement is that achieving the look you want won't necessarily happen overnight. If you have very thin lips and want to achieve a very full but natural look, this can take a few sessions and therefore be more expensive. The key is stages of correction which allow me to build a whole new lip for a patient in terms of size and shape over time. 4. HA fillers typically last about 9 months to one year. Most of my patients treat their lips annually to maintain the look they want. For those desiring a fuller lip enhancement, getting a treatment every 6 months is often needed. 5. You will see results almost immediately. Your lips will be a little swollen at first but you'll see the effects of the fillers pretty quickly. Give your lips 24 hours to settle and the swelling to calm. Then you'll be seeing your filled-out lips as they will be for the next several months. 6. If done correctly, lips with injections don't feel any different than real lips. Even when kissing! I always tell my patients in regards to fillers, you should not see the product, feel the product, or have any tenderness when it is all said and done. However, the first 24- 48 hours you will have some swelling, possible firmness and tenderness to the area treated. 7. You can choose to have your lips numbed beforehand with a topical anesthetic or your injector may consider using a microcannula. Either way, you will feel a little pinch and a little sting as the filler is being injected. There is numbing in the filler itself so, the lips soon become quite numb. This numbness lasts about an hour. 8. There isn't that much downtime. You can go about your daily life afterward but shouldn't make any big plans (like a wedding or an important event) for at least three days in case you bruise. 10. You shouldn't exercise the day of the procedure. It won't effect the overall outcome of your treatment if you exercise; however, it may increase your chances of experiencing swelling and bruising. 11. You don't have to go all out. You can choose which areas of your lips you'd like the focus to be. Whether you want to do the corners of your mouth, both lips, just the bottom lip, or the middle of the top lip, you can plump wherever you and your provider decide will best compliment the rest of your facial features. I personally like it when patient take baby steps when doing fillers. 12. One week prior to your procedure, avoid painkillers (except Tylenol), aspirin, fish oil, and vitamin E, which tend to thin the blood. Thinner blood will make the area more prone to bruising and bleeding. 13. Some slight bruising and bleeding at the injection site is normal and expected. If you experience bruising, it should fade after five to seven days. Bruising is shown to occur significantly less with the use of a microcannula. Your provider could also use a laser to help break down a bruise quicker, too. 14. You can use an oral or a topical supplement to help with bruising. Take Arnica, Bromelain and Vitamin C 3000mg/day to reduce post-filler bruising and inflammation. We recommend it for our patients to speed up the healing process. 15. Don't expect to get Angelina Jolie's lips. You can bring in inspiration photos, but ultimately, you and your provider should decide what look is best for your face. You should also expect to increase the size gradually over time — not all at once — for the most natural results. 16. The tiny white bumps in the lips you see sometimes are sebaceous glands. These are more visible once the lips are more taut. 17. Anyone who has a history of cold sores should take prevention medication at least one day before the procedure. Injections could trigger a cold sore. Be sure to notify your injector if you are prone to cold sores. 18. If you eventually decide to stop getting injections, your lips will return to their original state and they will just go through the natural aging process. Contrary to what you might think, your lips will not turn into saggy, wrinkly skin bags or look like a deflated balloon. However, the HA that was injected into your lips has been proven to jump-start more HA production at the site of the injection, so your lips could naturally remain a bit larger, thanks to the previous injections. 19. Understand that lip injections are invasive procedures with risks. Although it is a "lunchtime" procedure, the patient needs to consider possible serious risks, such as vascular occlusion, before making the final decision to go through with it. 20. Choose your injector wisely. Your friends' recommendations are important; however, finding an experienced injector who will customize your treatment to your needs and desires is also crucial. When it comes to fillers of any kind, experience matters. Scroll down below for some great before and after pictures. If you would think you would like lip injections, please come and see us. We can help customize a treatment plan that is perfect for you. Give us a call at 479-254-9662, Option 2. As I look back on the last year, I have seen lots of positive changes here at Hull Aesthetics. I have worked hard through the year to encourage all of our providers to work closely with our patients on developing treatment plans. When you come in and complete a self-assessment form, we use that information to customize a treatment plan that works specifically for you and addresses your concerns. I thank all of you for taking the time to fill those out. As a nurse injector, I enjoy working as a trainer for Galderma and Allergan. Not only am I always learning new tips and tricks (see my Hull Lotta Love for great news on injections!) but I stay abreast of the latest and greatest in new products that are launching. Once again, it is going to be an exciting year! A few months ago I sat for my Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist Exam, which is offered to nurses meeting certain criteria. I am happy that I can add CANS to my title. This credential recognizes my years of experience and dedication to cosmetic dermatology and my specialized training will give you the best possible results for your facial rejuvenation treatments. As many of you know, Tammy went back to nursing on our Dermatology side; so although she is still a part of our Hull family, I know her patients will miss her. However, we have recently added Alex Cook, RN to our staff. I have known her for years and am excited about her joining our team. Read more about her in this newsletter. Speaking of employees, I am very happy to say Randi is coming back. If you are interested in permanent makeup or microblading, she is your go-to girl. I thank all of you for being loyal patients and true friends to our practice. Below you can read a message from Dr. Hull about how important your point of view is to us. If you have the time, I would appreciate you leaving us your feedback. It's for a good cause and trust me, we want to know. Your experience here is very important to us. By: Dr. Cheryl Hull As many of our Facebook followers have noticed, we have been posting this request for reviews. It is very important to me to hear what you think about our services and staff. It is my mission to provide the best dermatological and aesthetic care and that each of you know how important you are to us. I am thankful that you trust us with your skin care needs. As a gesture of appreciation, I would like to offer a donation to this valuable organization. For every review you give us through March, we will donate $10 to Hope Cancer Resources.
