University Updates

Welcome to the last edition of University Updates before the summer holidays

Mumps - have you been vaccinated?

There have been several cases of mumps this term and so if you haven't had two MMR vaccinations it is strongly recommended by the NHS that you do so, to protect yourself and others. While most people recover without the need for treatment, it is very contagious and can cause complications in some cases. It’s most recognisable by painful swellings at the side of the face under the ears, flu like symptoms, headache and fever but you can read more about symptoms here. If you think you may have mumps please go and see your doctor for advice. It is very important to stay away from University, work or social gatherings for five days to reduce spreading the infection to others.
If you’re not sure if you’ve had the MMR vaccine it’s recommended that you speak to the Student Health Centre (or your own GP surgery) and arrange to receive it. You can find out more about the MMR vaccine here. It also protects against measles which is a more dangerous infection being seen more commonly in the UK.

Exam results

The summer exam results will be released on Thursday 20 June and you can read more details here. If you're celebrating the end of exams and term, please remember your neighbours and keep noise to within reasonable levels. Sound can carry, particularly at night and other residents may need to get up early the next day for work or school.

Free Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for depression

The AccEPT Clinic (based at the University of Exeter) offers Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) in Exeter and is now accepting self-referrals. MBCT is for people who have a history of recurrent depression but are currently well and wanting to find ways of preventing relapse. You do not need a clinical diagnosis from a health professional to be eligible for these courses but there will be a pre-course screening questionnaire for you to complete. For more information about these NHS-funded courses please visit the AccEPT Clinic web pages or contact us at accept.clinic@nhs.net.

Online module change?

Between midday Monday 8 July – midday Friday 19 July, you will be able to submit an online form if you need to request a change to any of the module choices that you made in March 2019. The approval of module choice changes are dependent on student numbers on the module, programme rules, and timetabling. Therefore some changes may not be possible. For more information, visit the module change pages, read our FAQs, or contact your Hub/Info Point.

Bin forgetting?

Exeter City Council has a new reminder service that sends an email out to subscribers the night before bin day reminding them to put their bins out (and which one). It also sends messages about any changes to collections, such as bank holidays, bad weather, etc. Never miss bin day again!!

Beware of scams

Unfortunately, some criminals try to get money from students, particularly our international students, through scams. Some of these scams seem very authentic and persuasive and can be frightening. Please don’t give out any personal details, especially banking details. Examples of recent scams included criminals pretending to be from the Home Office and the University. If you’re contacted by someone and it seems unusual, unexpected or just odd, end the call/communication. If the person who contacted you is genuine they won’t mind you checking and then getting back to them. You can contact your Info Point for advice. Read more here.
