Newsletter - Monday 17th August 2015

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank those that have responded so far to my recent Redland City Survey that was distributed across the City. The surveys continue to arrive via my inbox and post box and once collated, I will be able to provide you with a snapshot of our community's opinion. If you missed your chance to comment it is still available at this link.

At this stage the number one issue nominated by respondents is traffic congestion.  I am already looking at ways to reduce this impact on drivers, including working with the State Government which is responsible for the main roads around the Redlands.  I'll keep you updated on those discussions in the coming months.

Some other news over the past week in Council is outlined below,.

Council votes to establish Commonwealth Games liaison committee

At Council’s General Meeting last week, we supported a request from Cr Mark Edwards to encourage athletes and officals from the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games to visit the Redlands, voting to establish a liaison committee to coordinate opportunities and relationships between Commonwealth Games teams and our local community.

Council will prepare a report and recommend a structure for the proposed committee, which is expected to include representatives from Council, State Government, industry bodies, local sporting organisations and the community.
I have also been encouraged by Minister Kate Jones’ commitment to keep Redland City’s in mind for opportunities for cycling being so close to the Chandler velodrome, our pursuit of a Mountain Bike track in Southern Redlands and our great road surfaces that attract cyclists every weekend to our City.

Council to Request Clarity from State Government on Straddie Transition

There was strong debate at our General Meeting which resulted in a uniamous vote to make representation to the State Government for urgent clarity around their strategy for sandmining ending on North Stradbroke Island.  Through my Mayoral Minute we also confirmed our concerns on the short timeframe of 3.5 years in which a sustainable economic transition will be required.

Councillors expressed concern at a lack of information from the State Government and the need for Council to be involved in the planning.

Councillors will request an urgent meeting with the State Government and consider the information before preparing further submissions to the State Government.

Mayoral Prayer Breakfast 28th August

One of the privileges of serving our City is to bring our community together to raise awareness and funds to support our most vulnerable.  This is why the Mayoral Prayer Breakfast is so close to my heart.

The funds raised at this event support our chaplains in our local schools and provide support for our young Redlanders and future leaders.  The good news is that there are still tickets left for this year’s Mayoral Prayer Breakfast Friday 28 August.

Last year’s Mayoral Prayer Breakfast raised more than $13,000 to support the local community.

This year’s guest speaker is Wez Hone one of Australia’s leading ‘faith in business’ thinkers, applying his strong faith to his own success in business.

Tickets are on sale through Redland Performing Arts Centre Ticketing by telephone, online or in person.

  • In person - Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) box office, 2-16 Middle Street, Cleveland Qld 4163
  • Online - www.rpac.com.au
  • Telephone - phone bookings can be made during business hours on 07 3829 8131.

Council to Reopen Straddie's Damaged South Gorge Stairs

Redland City Council has allocated $180,000 to rebuild the popular South Gorge stairs on North Stradbroke Island, which were washed out during heavy rain in January.

The funding allocated during last weeks General Meeting was an interim measure while a permanent solution was designed. The South Gorge pedestrian walk is a popular attraction for tourists and residents taking in the beautiful Straddie vistas and this funding will allow us to reopen it quickly and safely.

Storms in January resulted in larger than usual stormwater runoff eroding the ground under the timber stairs, undermining the integrity of the pedestrian access, so it had to be closed for safety reasons.

Due to the terrain a long-term solution may be expensive and take time, so last weeks decision is important to providing access to residents as soon as possible.

Thankyou

In closing, thank you for your support so far during this term of Council, and I look forward to maintaining that support into the future as I deliver on my commitments.

I encourage you to stay informed via my Website, Facebook or Twitter, and don't hesitate to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns.  Feel free to pass on this information to anyone else who has an interest in the Redlands.

This newsletter was prepared and paid for by myself and no ratepayers funds were utilised in its production.
