Bulletin August 2018  #101

Prevailing community standards and the law

A recent decision by the Ad Standards Independent Reviewer has highlighted the need for advertisers to ensure that advertisements do not depict any activity which would breach a law in any Australian state or territory. See the Ad Standards blog for details.

Ad scheduling and the relevant audience

Different restrictions between free-to-air and on-demand TV means advertisers need to consider the relevant audience when scheduling TV ads across different television channels.

Complaints about an ad for a sexual health product seen on on-demand TV during typical family viewing time were upheld by the Ad Standards Community Panel for not treating the issue of sex, sexuality and nudity with sensitivity to the relevant audience.

New gambling ad rules for online content service providers

New rules about the placement of gambling advertising during live sport streamed online between 5am and 8.30pm have been approved by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

Complaints about the content of wagering advertisements should still be lodged through the Ad Standards website.

Government submissions now online

Ad Standards makes regular submissions to Australian Government enquiries and consultation processes on a wide range of issues relevant to the advertising self-regulation system. These are published on the Ad Standards website.
