Barnard College Construction Update - March 21, 2016

Dear Neighbor,

This week, the Barnard construction team is expected to begin demolition.  We were originally scheduled to begin demolition in mid-February, but have been delayed due to permitting issues and inclement weather.  While these delays are to be expected in any complex construction project, we will need to make up some time between now and the end of the semester to keep the loudest work – the phase that includes rock excavation – during the summer of 2016 when the noise will have the least impact on the campus and surrounding community.  Schedule changes will include:

  • Extending work until 6:30 p.m. on weekdays for several weeks; and
  • Adding work from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on up to seven Saturdays between April and early June (primarily in April and late May).

Please note that we will not be working on key days at the end of the semester, including Saturday, May 7; Saturday, May 14; or during Barnard’s reading period, final exams or commencement ceremonies.

In addition, we anticipate losing some workdays to weather this spring, so there may be slight adjustments to this revised schedule. We will send out weekly schedules in advance through our email updates.

We thank you in advance for your patience and apologize for the inconvenience.

Two Week Look-Ahead

As mentioned above, we expect to begin demolition later this week, but most of the equipment we will be using during this phase will arrive on campus early the week of March 28. A crane will be located on Claremont Avenue for 4-6 hours to move that equipment onto the site. Due to city regulations regarding the transport of cranes, we expect the crane to arrive on site and the moving of equipment to begin around 6:30 a.m.
