De voorbije maanden en zeker de laatste weken puilde onze mailbox uit. Waarom het zo lang duurde vooraleer we met nieuwe namen op de proppen komen? Of we niet al van start kunnen gaan met de verkoop van tickets? Samen met nog een pak andere vragen getuigt dit mooi dat Alcatraz Metal Festival echt leeft en dat de metalliefhebbers vol verlangen uitkijken naar de nieuwe editie. De (festival)zomer nadert inderdaad met rasse schreden en achter de schermen wordt allesbehalve stil gezeten. Meer nog, onze headliner voor zaterdag is (eindelijk) rond. Het is dan ook met vooruitgestoken borst dat we niemand minder dan Twisted Sister aankondigen als afsluiter van het festival op zaterdag. Niet dat wij ooit getwijfeld hebben aan de kwaliteiten van de Amerikaanse band, maar sinds hun dubbele passage in Dessel is IEDEREEN het erover eens dat er geen enkele andere band op deze aardkloot rondloopt die een weide van voor tot he-le-maal achterin in lichterlaaie kan zetten (Hoeveel mensen hebben het rotslechte weer doorstaan? 30.000?), zelfs niet diegenen die al eens smalend doen over deze op en top partybeesten. Geen Alcatraz festival zonder een gerenommeerde thrashband en dat is dit jaar niet anders. Testament stond op onze wishlist, werd bijna bevestigd, maar uiteindelijk afgeblazen. Eén van de leden van de Bay Area thrashers kon er niet bij zijn. Spijtig! Rondvraag leerde ons dat de thrashers onder onze bezoekers graag nog eens Sacred Reich aan het werk wilden zien…. en zo geschiedt. Niet onterecht overigens. De historische invloed van deze uit Phoenix afkomstige band mag niet onderschat worden. Je ziet de bandnaam steevast opduiken als bron van inspiratie bij talloze jonge thrashbands. Ooit begonnen als snelheidsduivels (‘Ignorance’ en ‘Surf Nicaragua’) komt de klemtoon met albums als ‘The American Way’ & ‘Independent’ meer te liggen op groovende midtempo thrash. Als in 1994 het album ‘Cleansing’ verschijnt, slaan wij pal achterover. Uiteraard waren we al fan van het eerdere werk van de band rond Tommy Victor, maar wanneer we rond de oren worden geslagen met nummers als ‘Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck’, ‘Whose Fist Is This Anyway’ en ‘Broken Peace’, om er enkele te noemen, neemt onze appreciatie voor de band nog toe. We zijn niet alleen, ‘Cleansing’ wordt ook commercieel gezien een kanjer en het succes neemt midden jaren negentig even buitengewone proporties aan. Prong wordt plots aanzien als een topact en slaagt er met gemak in fans van alternatiever werk én metalfans te bekoren met hun ‘alt-industrial’ metal. Lees meer.

Net als bij Sacred Reich liggen de wortels van Toxik in het gezegende jaar 1985. En net als Sacred Reich is ook Toxik een thrashband, maar dan wel eentje van een verschillend allooi dan hun landgenoten uit Phoenix. Deze New Yorkers trekken een ferme progressieve streep door het muzikale pallet, waarbij beukende gitaarriffs hand in hand gaan met melodieuze harmonieën. Het onderscheidt Toxik in die periode van vele opkomende thrashbands waarbij vooral de term ‘snel’ en ‘hard’ primeert. Het legt de band geen windeieren. De talentenscouts van het vermaarde Roadrunner Records krijgen de kwaliteiten van Toxik in de smiezen en bieden hen een contract aan. Debuutplaat ‘World Circus’ slaat in als een bom en scoort in 1987 dan ook hoog in heel wat eindejaarslijstjes. Ook in Eindhoven weten ze deze band van over de plas naar waarde te schatten en in 1988 staat Toxik niet geheel onverwacht te blinken op het podium van Dynamo Open Air. Een memorabel concert, volgens diegenen die er toen bij waren. Wij worden nog grotere fans als in 1989 ‘Think This’ verschijnt, een meesterwerk dat het midden houdt tussen de techniciteit van bands als Fates Warning en Queensrÿche enerzijds, en het betere beukwerk van headbangers als Nuclear Assault of Death Angel anderzijds. Twee namen werden al bekend gemaakt op de voorbije editie van het festival. Eentje ervan is W.A.S.P.

Blackie Lawless, de controversiële frontman van W.A.S.P., blaast in september 58 kaarsjes uit. Niet dat het de boomlange zanger/gitarist aan te zien is dat hij de pensioengerechtigde leeftijd nadert. Blackie blaakt immers van gezondheid en is nog steeds een van de vitaalste frontmannen in de metalscene, zo mochten wij nog ervaren tijdens een passage van de band in Antwerpen enige tijd terug. Desondanks is Lawless een oude rot in het vak die al bijna veertig (!) jaar op de planken staat (in 1975 reeds met New York Dolls) en verschillende klassiekers op zijn naam heeft staan. De band sloeg destijds meteen gensters met debuutplaat ‘W.A.S.P’. En laat ons festival nu net de plaats zijn waar Blackie & Co een feestje willen opzetten om de dertigste verjaardag van dit onvolprezen album met de nodige luister te vieren. Lees meer.

Op het podium van Alcatraz stonden de voorbije jaren al meermaals dames die met hun mooie stemmen en dito uitstraling menig bezoeker konden bekoren. Ver weg van dit alles heerst echter een jongedame met haar ijzingwekkende stem en prachtige uitstraling als een Khaleesi over de donkerste krochten van de hel. Haar naam is Angela Gossow. Sinds de eeuwwisseling voert de Duitse frontdame het legertje Zweedse wildemannen aan die Dothraki-gewijs Europa en de rest van de wereld gestaag maar zelfzeker wisten te veroveren met hun melodieuze edoch stoere death metal. ‘Black Earth’, ‘Doomsday Machine’, Rise Of The Tyrant’, ‘The Root Of All Evil’ of ‘Khaos Legion’, het zijn welluidende titels van albums die de krijgslust van deze roedel bloedhonden, geleid door de blonde bastaard, typeren. Inmiddels is Arch Enemy een graag geziene gast op festivals en blijft het op gezette tijden een nieuw album afleveren. Zo komt er ook eentje uit in 2014 en wij vermoeden dat we daar in Kortrijk enkele nummers uit te horen zullen krijgen. Op de vraag wie nu eigenlijk de échte metal-koningin is blijven wij het antwoord voorlopig schuldig. Let the game of thrones begin… Lees meer.

Over the past months and especially the last weeks our mailbox was bulging out. Why it took so long before we come up with some new names? Whether we could not proceed selling tickets already? Along with a lot of other questions it seems Alcatraz Metal Festival really lives and the metal fans are eagerly looking forward to the new edition. The festival summer is approaching rapidly and behind the scenes there’s a lot of hard working going on. Moreover, our headliner is finally confirmed. It’s therefore we are really proud to announce the mighty Twisted Sister will headline the festival on Saturday. Not that we ever doubted the qualities of this American band but since their double passage in Dessel EVERYONE agrees that no other band on this planet can put a festival field on fire like Twisted Sister. It is even not difficult if you know the repertoire of the band are notorious sing-alongs like “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock”, songs which are deeply etched in the collective memory (remember MTV?) of many metal heads. Those are also songs with a view behind. Dee Snider is known to spit on everything that affects the credibility of rock and metal and has a free speech in general. Read more.

No Alcatraz festival without a reputable thrash band, and that’s no different this year. Testament was on our wish list, almost confirmed but at the end they called off. One of the members from the Bay Area thrashers couldn’t make it. Pity! We asked around and many thrashers among our visitors would love to have Sacred Reich into the line-up…so it will be done! And not without any reasons. The historical influence from this band from Phoenix should not be underestimated. The band name is emerging as a source of inspiration to countless young thrash bands. Once they started as speed demons (“Ignorance” and “Surf Nicaragua”) but then the emphasis was put on groovy mid-tempo thrash with albums like “The American Way” and “Independent”. In 1994 as the album “Cleansing” was released, we got smashed up. As with Sacred Reich the roots from Toxik are going back to the blessed year 1985. And also like Sacred Reich, Toxik is a thrash metal band but one of a different kind. The New Yorkers draw a line through the progressive music with pounding guitar riffs and melodic harmonies. In that period it distinguishes Toxik of many emerging bands which particularly the term ‘fast’ and ‘hard’ prevails. The talent scouts from the famous Roadrunner Records discover their abilities and offer the band a contract. Their debut album “World Circus” is a big success and receives high scores in the year-end lists from 1987. Also in Eindhoven they appreciate the band from overseas and Toxik is playing the Dynamo Open Air festival in 1988. According to those who were there it was a memorable concert.  As soon as the masterpiece “Think This” was released in 1989 we became even bigger fans. The album is a mix with technical aspects from bands like Fates Warning and Queensryche, and at the other hand the better pounding riffs from bands like Nuclear Assault and Death Angel. Read more.

Blackie Lawless, the controversial frontman of W.A.S.P. celebrates his 58th birthday in September. But you certainly would not give the tall singer / guitarist his age. Blackie is still one of the most vital frontmen in the metal scene, also we experienced during the passage of the band a few months ago. Nevertheless, Blackie is on old warhorse who has been on stage for almost forty years (already in 1975 with the New York Dolls) and with several classics on his name. The band instantly hit sparks with their debut album “W.A.S.P.” And our festival is just the place where Blackie & co would like to set up the celebration for the thirtieth anniversary of the acclaimed album. In the past years on the Alcatraz stage we had several ladies with their beautiful voices and ditto appearances which could tempt many visitors.However, far away from here there ‘s a young lady reigning with her chilling voice and beautiful appearance as a Khaleesi of the darkest depths of hell. Her name is Angelo Gossow. Since the millennium, the German front lady managed to lead her Swedish wild men and to conquer Europe and the rest of the world, slowly but surely. ‘Black Earth’, ‘Doomsday Machine’, Rise Of The Tyrant’, ‘The Root Of All Evil’ or ‘Khaos Legion’, those are album titles which typify the desire from those bloodhounds, led by the blond bastard. Meanwhile Arch Enemy is a popular guest at festivals and continuous to deliver new albums regularly. There will also be a new release in 2014 and we suppose to hear some new songs at the festival in Kortrijk. On the question of who is the true metal queen now, we remain guilty for the time being.
