MAKE Newsletter

July 12, 2011

"Summertime, and the living making is easy..." Or at least, the time is frequently more available for making. We hope you've made it a summer priority to get out there and get your hands dirty, try a new skill, or to build something cool with the kids. If you're looking for inspiration and how-to, there's no better place to peruse than Make: Projects. We have hundreds of projects, in dozens of different categories. It's a treasure trove of makery gems! If you are working on a special summer project, we'd love to hear about it. We might even feature it on the site. --Gareth

Tips My Dad Says

Father's Day was a blast on MAKE. Among other things, we community-sourced a collection of words o' wisdom and maker tips from dads and granddads, and we got a phenomenal response. People are still adding to it. We also produced a downloadable card. The printed card is perfect for pinning up on the wall of your workshop or slotting into the pocket of your Maker's Notebook.

Intern's Corner

Meet Daniel Spangler, our latest Make: Labs engineering intern. When he showed up at our doorstep with this big freakin' gun, looking for a job, how could we refuse? Not because we were scared, but because it was so impressive and cool. It's a propane-powered internal combustion cannon with interchangeable barrels. You can find out more about it, and see a video, here.

MAKE on PBS NewsHour

We're still all aglow over this amazing piece that appeared on PBS' NewsHour on June 29. It looks at MAKE, the maker movement, and the contributions we're making toward transforming science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Oh, and the radical notion that learning can be fun! You can see the piece as it was broadcast here and see a support piece, with Adam Savage from Maker Faire, here.

Robotics Month on MAKE

This month we're focusing on robots as our monthly theme, to coincide with the release of MAKE Volume 27, our latest robots issue (see sidebar). On the MAKE site, we're sharing robotics 101 tutorials in our Skill Builder series, rounding up the best from the magazine, website, and Make: Projects, and welcoming hobby robotics godfather Gordon McComb, talking about his latest (4th) edition of Robot Builder's Bonanza.

Help Nominate for the Makey Awards!

Please help us nominate 16 mainstream companies that (whether intentionally or not) serve the interests of makers. You'll get to vote on the winners, and they'll be announced live (and webcast) at Maker Faire New York.

Weekend Projects and The Great Create

In a couple of weeks, we'll be launching a series of 15 Weekend Projects, brought to you by RadioShack's The Great Create. These cool electronics how-tos will appear as a special section on Make: Projects, on a custom MAKE Facebook subsection, and there will be a weekly newsletter to support the program. The weekly newsletter will allow subscribers to see the new projects first and will contain project news and photos, build tips, builder profiles, and more. Don't miss out on any of the action. You can subscribe here.
