Editor's note
|
The slurs and booing directed at Indigenous footballer Adam Goodes during his time playing for the Sydney Swans highlighted a racism that plagued both Australian Rules football and our wider culture. Goodes called out this racism, but as a new film shows, the hatred subsequently directed at him affected him deeply.
This film, The Australian Dream, was written by journalist Stan Grant and premiered last night at the Melbourne Film Festival. As Nonie May writes, it is both an affectionate portrait of a man, his sport and his country and an at times shocking indictment of our racist past.
The Australian Dream ends, she writes, on an optimistic note, but “if you love your footy, if you love your country, this is a must watch”.
