Newsletter 15 - September 25, 2020

From The Principal

What a highly productive and engaging Term 3, which culminated with the whole school celebration of learning at last week's Open Night. The students have been actively engaged throughout the term with Read More in August and Book Week literacy activities, 3 vibrant Athletics Carnivals, Bring a Cup Fill it Up to promote the eating of fruit and vegetables, and RUOK Day. At our school we focus on giving Our Best and aligning with our new Business Plan motto Connecting Minds and Hearts. A print copy of our new Business Plan will be sent home first week back next term.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break. School resumes for students on Tuesday 13 October.

Whole School Music Video

The 'finale' of our amazing Open Night has traditionally been a celebration of singing together as a school. In previous years we have always concluded the event with whole school singing as well as performances by our school choir. We have had to do things differently in 2020 and we were unable to have our community singing at the end of last week's Open Night. As an alternative, we are delighted to present a video recording of all Year 1-6 classes performing You Won't Bring Us Down, the Year 4-6 school choir performing Times Like These and our Year 5-6 String/Flute orchestra.

Our whole school song performance You Won't Bring Us Down was co-written for Music Count Us In by Greta Lynch, a former student at our school. Greta visited our school earlier this term and performed the song during sub-assemblies. Greta certainly inspired our students when preparing for our whole school song.

We hope you enjoy it!

Open Night A Huge Success

Thank you to all the parents who attended Open Night. I received a lot of positive feedback from parents and teachers about the reduced numbers in classes. The flow on effect was a calm environment for parents to engage in the learning process with their children. All the children were extremely proud of their work and the beaming smiles captured it all. Click HERE for photos.

Best Wishes Carol

Today marks the end of an era. Carol Malpas, our wonderful School Officer, is finishing up her time here at Subiaco and trading in the front desk for some well deserved downtime.

We would like to thank Carol for her hard work and dedication to our school over the last 10 years and wish her all the very best for the future.

2020 Interschool Carnival

The sun was shining and the smiles were beaming at the 2020 West Coast Region Interschool Athletics Carnival. Subiaco students competed in Sprints, Team Games and Relays against students from Karrinyup PS, Mt Hawthorn PS, Wembley PS and Floreat Park PS. This day was the culmination of a lot of hard work from our interschool representatives. All students competed with fierce determination and did our school proud. Click HERE to see photos of the children in action. While we didn’t walk away with the overall trophy with did have some special individual performances.

Interm Swimming Program

All Year 2-5 students will be participating in the Interm Swimming program at the Claremont Aquatic Centre during Weeks 1-2. Information was sent out via Compass this week. The school requires permission for the students to travel by bus and to participate in the swimming lessons, this is to be filled out online. The Department Interm Swimming ENROLMENT FORM needs to be printed, completed and returned to class teachers by Tuesday 13 October. Hard copies of this ENROLMENT FORM, required by the swim instructors, were also sent home this week.

Due to the Aquatic Centre double booking the pools on Monday 19 and Wednesday 21 October, our students will now participate in a 6 day Interm Swimming Program.

Curriculum

Kindy Educated by Nature
The Kindergarten children were taken on a magical imagination adventure this week. We made potions to scare away dragons, turned ourselves into frogs, and even made Mummy’s Morning Green Juice with mason jars and essential oils. We built castles for princesses to live in, we built our own houses, and even our neighbourhood. We tinkered with beautiful antique tea cups, and precious brass items. Thank you to Educated by Nature for this wonderful incursion. Click HERE for photos.

Pre-Primary West Oz Wildlife Incursion
This week West Oz Wildlife came to Pre-Primary and all classes had the opportunity to view a variety of Australian animals including Kira the Koala, Yapper the Dingo, some snakes including Rosie the Python, and a blue tongued lizard. The children learnt so many interesting facts about these animals including what they eat, their habitats, how they protect themselves, special features and which species they belong to. Under supervision, the children were given the opportunity to pat the animals gently or to have a snake placed around their shoulders. It was an educational, hands on and enjoyable experience for all. The incursion was also a great conclusion to our Term 3 animal studies unit of work. Click HERE for photos.

Pre-Primary Science Day
All four Pre-Primary classes enjoyed experiencing a vast range of science activities and experiments as part of a special Science Day this week! They had a fantastic morning learning many new science concepts and loved being outside on such a beautiful Spring day. Some of the science stations included:

  • exploding volcanoes
  • colour mixing experiments
  • coloured goop
  • expanding balloon experiment
  • leakproof bag experiment (poking pencils in a bag without all the water coming out!)
  • air stomp rockets- using a pipe and 2L soda bottle
  • floating and sinking boat experiment
  • magnets exploration table
  • making helicopters
  • Japanese flower press station
  • teddy bears picnic role play cooking station
  • bubble blowing art

Many thanks to the incredible parent volunteers who helped run various science stations in the morning! Click HERE for photos.

If anyone is interested in building their own air stomp rocket over the holidays, Rylan's dad Matt, has kindly shared the instructions which can be viewed HERE.

Year 2 Insect Incursion
This term, the Year 2 students have been looking at Lifecycles for Science. To finish off the unit, we were lucky enough to have Butterfly Dreams come in and teach us about some different insects and allow us to have hands on learning. Some students were very brave! Click HERE for photos.

Telethon Virtual Choir at Langley Park
Our school choir have been busy preparing for a Telethon Virtual Choir performance of the song Times Like These. Earlier this week the choir were filmed singing with 1000 students at Langley Park. The students did an amazing job in between rain showers, with drone cameras filming their singing together with perfectly co-ordinated actions! Look out for their performance which will be broadcast on Chanel 7 on Sunday 25 October after the 6:30pm news. Follow Telethon7 on Facebook for regular updates, photos and videos. Well done to all our school choir! Click HERE for photos.

Safe and Responsible Digital Use During the Holidays

Technology offers so many benefits for children and families, but we must be mindful and manage the risks and challenges that are an inevitable part of the digital world. Over the holiday period, it is important parents stay connected to their child’s digital use and ensure you have set up a cyber safe home for children of all ages. You can access help, support and guidance through the recently released App, Beacon. Click HERE to be directed to their website for further information.

Recommended strategies for managing risks around digital use are detailed below:

  • Compose family guidelines around digital use together.
  • Set restriction on your child’s device (age range for APPS, movies, websites).
  • Set time limits for device use.
  • Monitor messaging and social media platforms that your child or child’s friends may use.

We hope this information is helpful in your discussions with your child. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Peter Hayward at peter.hayward@education.wa.edu.au

From the School Psychologist

Every year, World Mental Health Day is commemorated on 10 October, with this year's theme being Mental Health for All: Greater Investment - Greater Access.

COVID-19 has been a global health emergency that has impacted heavily on the mental health of millions of people. Life as we knew pre-Covid-19 has changed for most of us. Being optimistic, building resilience and having the capacity to navigate through difficult times may be even more challenging.

During Mental Health Week this year, 10 to 17 October, we can aspire to strengthen our personal wellbeing and that of our families, as well as support our friends, neighbours, and community. I have included a few websites to provide resources for your interest and information:

Dance Program

Our annual Dance program will commence Week 1 next term. All students from PP- Year 6 will engage in the Edu-Dance Dance program this year. Session days and weeks will vary slightly but all 8 sessions and the Dance Concert will be held between Weeks 1-10 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Click HERE for a look at the program.

Chapathon

Our annual Chapathon will be held Week 3, Term 4 in the Theatre Gardens on Thursday 29 October from 10.00-10:40am. All parents and caregivers are invited to come along and join in the fun event. The students will be walking to raise money to help support the School Chaplaincy program. Forms will be sent out through Compass in the first week of Term 4.

Year 6 Food Stall

To help refuel the weary bodies of the students after their Chapathon walk, the Year 6 students will be holding food stall at recess where they will be selling a range of healthy food options. Watermelon and iced fruit sticks will also be on sale.

The graduating Year 6 students are raising money to buy a gift for the school which will presented to Mrs Press at their graduation ceremony on Tuesday 15 December at the Arts Centre.

School Holiday Dental Emergency Cover

The School Dental Mobile will be closed from Thursday 1 October to Wednesday 7 October and also on Friday 9 October. During this time, emergency cover will be provided by Caralee Dental Therapy Centre who can be contacted by phone on 9337 6818 during working hours (8.00am-4.00pm).

The Mobile will re-open on Monday 12 October at Jolimont Primary School.

For Your Diary

Assemblies
Assemblies are held in the Subi Church directly opposite the school. The assemblies commence at approximately 8.55am and conclude at 9.25am. We have reduced the audience numbers significantly by alternating the participation of the Year 1-2 and the Year 3-6 assembly days.

Hand sanitiser is now provided at stations in the entry and auditorium, and bins are provided in the foyer for disposable coffee cups. Please remember this is a community church, and to refrain from bringing food and drinks into the auditorium.

We welcome parents taking photos and videos at the assembly but please do not put it on social media as some children do not have media consent.

Term 4
Week 2 22 October Year 2 L3 & L6 (Junior Yrs 1-2 attend)
Week 4 5 November Year 3 L1 & L2 (Senior Yrs 3-6 attend)
Week 6 19 November Year 2 L9 (Junior Yrs 1-2 attend)
Week 8 3 December Year 4 U5 (Senior Yrs 3-6 attend)

Reminders

Call Education Security If You See Anything Suspicious In School Grounds After Hours
On weekends and holidays we sometimes have unwanted behaviour and vandalism on our school grounds. Please call Education Security on 9264 4632 or 9264 4771 if you see anything suspicious.

School Grounds After Hours
We would like to remind parents that students should not be on the school grounds out of school hours unless accompanied by an adult. This includes not only after school, but on the weekends and during the school holidays. The school grounds are being used more and more by a wide range of community members, and the school staff cannot be held responsible for the safety of the students outside school hours.

Cross Walk Attendant
From time to time, the Cross Walk Attendant is not available and a replacement cannot be found. When this happens, we ask that children cross at the lights and not at the normal crossing place, unless accompanied by an adult.

Nature Play Area
Our Nature Play Area is a very popular site not only during school hours but after school and on the weekends, and the level of use in the area continues to grow as the school numbers grow. We hope that everyone who enjoys our Nature Play area (which includes 3 Morton Bay Figs and a Port Jackson Fig, all heritage listed trees) are respectful of the fact that these trees are very old. Climbing all over the large roots and trampling around the base of the trees can cause stress to the trees, especially in very hot or windy weather. Hopefully everyone using this peaceful and calming area will keep to the nature play equipment and be respectful of the trees.

Unwell Students
In line with WA Government advice that students and staff who are unwell should stay at home, we are asking all parents to keep your children at home if they show signs of cold or flu-like symptoms. If children become unwell during the school day we will call parents to collect their child. Students and staff should not return to school until they are completely well or have clearance from a medical practitioner.

Health Conditions & Allergies
Upon enrolment, if a child has a health condition or allergy (eg. diabetes, seizures, asthma, anaphylaxis etc) parents fill out a Student Health Care Summary form and an Action Plan is written. At the start of each year, the Action Plan is updated. Please contact the front office if you are unsure whether your child has a current Action Plan in place and they require one.

Updating School Records
If your address, telephone number or email address has changed, please contact the school office.

Publications Permission
Upon enrolment, parents decide whether to give consent for their child’s name, photo or work to be published in school newsletters, school related activities, promotional material for the Department of Education and articles for the West Australian and community newspapers. This consent continues for your child while enrolled at our school. If at any stage you want to change the permission status then you will need to notify the office in writing of this request.

Compass
Our school uses Compass School Manager to further enhance communication between home and school. If you are experiencing problems logging on to Compass please email subiaco.ps@education.wa.edu.au

WMRC partnering with Paraquad
WA Containers for Change officially launches on 1 October, and nearby Paraquad Industries in Shenton Park will be an authorised Refund Point. In support of the scheme, the West Metro Recycling Centre will accept donations of eligible drink containers and send them to Paraquad for recycling.

Taking your eligible containers to Paraquad Industries, 4 Orton Road, Shenton Park will earn you 10c per eligible container AND help create jobs for people living with disabilities. Now, that's a worthy investment!

And if you want to recycle more than empty drink containers, you can donate your pre-loved books, quality clothing, furniture, bric-a-brac and working appliances to Paraquad for their Op Shops and Book Bazaars. They even do house collections for bulky items!

Visit the Containers for Change site to see what containers are eligible, signup for a Scheme ID and to locate other refund points.
