Crofton House School  

A new year finds Crofton House full of inspiration and creativity. In this edition of 1898, we go out into the Vancouver community and talk to several alumnae who are making a difference with their careers in creative industries. We also feature some of the bright artistic minds gracing the school at present and delve into the features that keep the Crofton House art program innovating and flourishing.

Deb Chaney ‘92: A Contemporary Artist Inspiring Artists

Deb Chaney has been making a career with her unique brand of mixed media abstract expressionist art for the past ten years. She recently discussed with 1898 staff how she overcame the obstacles to becoming an artist, and offered some highly useful advice for those aspiring to creative careers. Celia Dawson ‘83: Executive Interior Designer and Community Leader

Celia Dawson knows all about balancing the interests of a creative mind and a corporate environment. She’s Senior Vice President of Interior Design for Polygon Building Ltd, one of British Columbia’s premiere housing companies. Even with such a remarkable CV, she still finds time to raise two daughters and sit on several volunteer committees. She took 1898 for a tour of Polygon’s offices and talked a little about her career and what others who aspire to become female executives can do. This month we interviewed the steady hand that keeps the Crofton House grounds and facilities looking beautiful and serene. Rick Barr, Facilities Manager, has worked at Crofton House for over thirty years, and in that time has seen four different Heads of School and a campus transformed with numerous new buildings and renovations. FEATURE: Art at Crofton House Today


How does one create an art program that is outstanding rather than merely acceptable?
