Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the January 2017 State-by-State Shipments to Wholesaler Report. Please note changes to historical volumes as some state totals may have changed with newly released state-level data.

Below find a few key points provided by our Chief Economist Michael Uhrich:

  • State-based beer shipment volume increased by 2.9% in January compared to January 2016 on one extra selling day.
  • On an adjusted basis, shipments declined by 1.7%.
  • Beer shipment volumes have increased by 0.6% over the 12 months ending January 2017.
  • January’s shipment volume was somewhat reduced due to high distributor inventory levels at the end of December.
  • U.S. real disposable income rose by only 2% in January compared to January 2016, the lowest percentage increase during the last three years. Less growth in discretionary income could be one factor preventing beer sales from increasing by a greater amount.
