Barnard College Construction Update - Jan. 7,  2016

Dear Neighbor,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season.  While our students are still on break, our Campus Services and construction teams are hard at work finishing the renovation of the LeFrak Center, securing the campus side of the new building construction site, and performing the regular maintenance we typically do during breaks.  Here is what to expect during the next two weeks.

Two-Week Look Ahead – Jan 6 – 20

  • We have moved our faculty members and library staff into the renovated LeFrak Center in Barnard Hall, which will officially open on Tuesday, Jan. 19. You will continue to see activity along Claremont during the next two weeks as the construction team puts the final touches on the new space.
  • The Barnard entrances on Claremont Avenue and Broadway at 119th Street will remain open as usual, and will continue to be the access points for walking through the College.
  • We do not expect any lane closures on Claremont during these two weeks.
  • We are continuing work on the Barnard lawn, relocating the portion of the telecommunications system and other infrastructure that runs through Lehman Hall, and building the north-south covered walkway. As a result, the lawn and sidewalk from the south end of Barnard Hall to Milbank Hall will continue to be closed.  Visitors will need to use Broadway to move between the north and south ends of campus. We expect that area of campus to reopen sometime at the end of next week.
  • At the end of this week, we will have a crew pouring concrete footings for the covered walkway. The trucks and equipment will be entering campus through Broadway and should not impact Claremont Avenue. However, you may hear some increased noise from the concrete trucks.

Down the Road

We are currently working to secure the construction site within campus before our students return on Tuesday, Jan. 19. We expect to begin securing the site along Claremont towards the end of January or beginning of February. We will notify you once that work is scheduled.
