Welcome to the 2015 Golf Season!!

Welcome

With the nights drawing out and the clocks going forward at the end of the month the golf season is within touching distance now.

With only 4 weeks until The Masters it's time to dust down the clubs and clean up the shoes…or if they’re looking a little worse for wear you could always treat yourself to a new pair for the new season? Luckily we’re looking at the latest footwear available this season in this month’s newsletter.

We’ve also teamed up with FootJoy to give you the opportunity to win a pair of the brand’s most distinctive footwear category to date – HYPERFLEX.

Big news this month is our first Ladies Fashion Show will take place in the Clubhouse on Thursday 26th March. With over 90 ladies confirmed we still have a few tickets left, these are priced at £5 and are available from the Pro Shop.

We also announce the dates for our Junior Easter Coaching Program and upcoming Fitting Tour Events as well as Craig bringing you top tips to work on your pitching after wintering off a mat!

Finally this months banner video Louis Oosthuizens shows you how to hit both uphill and downhill bunker shots.

As ever if you have any questions about any aspect of your game or equipment please do not hesitate to pop in and see us in the Pro Shop.

FootJoy HyperFlex Competition

We have teamed up with FootJoy to offer three lucky readers the opportunity to win a pair of the striking new HYPERFLEX shoes.

The HYPERFLEX is the most distinctive footwear category in FootJoy’s history. Featuring innovative materials, like the new FlexGrid exoskeleton, HYPERFLEX delivers lightweight support and cushioning, enabling golfers to play at their highest level.

The very distinctive FlexGrid upper was inspired by the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston, Massachusetts. When viewing this type of cable-stayed bridge at different angles, the cables create a grid offering tremendous strength and support, all while maintaining a sleek, lightweight and technical appearance – similar to FlexGrid.

To be in with a chance of winning this great prize just answer the simple question below.

Q. Which FJ Tour Ambassador was first seen wearing HYPERFLEX at the 2014 Ryder Cup?

A. Hunter Mahan
B. Lee Westwood
C. Henrik Stenson

Adidas Boost

adidas BOOST

adidas boost technology is designed to deliver maximum energy return, responsiveness and unparalleled comfort. The boost cushioning is comprised of thousands of TPU energy capsules fused together. While traditional EVA foam hardens and softens when temperatures fluctuate, boost foam retains consistent cushioning in all conditions.

Combined with a lace-in saddle, fitsleeve tongue wrapping, external heel counter and a fitfoam PU sockliner, adipower boost delivers a more precise fit to create the most comfortable shoe in adidas Golf history.

After extensive player testing, adidas Golf have incorporated the revolutionary gripmore technology in the shoe’s construction. To aid performance, gripmore spikes of varying sizes, strategically located deliver improved efficient traction and stability.

ECCO Biom

BIOM Hybrid

The new BIOM Hybrid 2 will be worn in competition by Tour star Fred Couples and other ECCO Golf staff players. It is 15% lighter than the original model thanks to an extra-thin midsole that helps bring players closer to the playing surface. This is complemented by a dual-density TPU outsole. Two-coloured to create an inspiring aesthetic, it is harder in areas that need the most stability and softer in key comfort zones.

Like all ECCO golf shoes, BIOM Hybrid 2 is created using the advanced Direct-injection Process. This bonds the upper and outsole unit, creating a one-piece shoe construction without the use of glue or stitching. Benefits include an exceptionally watertight seal, outstanding flexibility and out-of-the-box comfort.

Craig's Top Tips

“HOW TO HIT PERFECT PITCH SHOTS”

What causes inconsistent Pitching?

1. Mishits and poor strikes
2. Inconsistent speeds and distance control
3. Too steep an angle of attack leading to fats and thins
4. Incorrect club selection

Keys to hitting perfect Pitches (65 yard example)

Club Selection - Choose a club that is easily going to make the desired distance without too much force and allow some degree of roll toward the target on landing for me this would be a 52 degree wedge from 65 yards.

Ball position – middle to forward of stance, this will allow the club to shallow out upon contact with the ground allowing the bounce of the club to work and provide a solid contact.
Weight distribution – Only slightly favouring the left side, too much on the left usually tends to aid a steep angle of attack which is what we want to avoid!
Length of swing – Use the left arm as a gauge for controlling your backswing similar to the arm on a clock face and should be at least the same length on the follow through. For 65 yards say 8 o’clock through to 9 o’clock at a brisk speed with the body turning to have the chest facing the target.

Drill – place a towel level with the back foot behind the ball focusing on trying to make good contact with the ‘ball then turf’ this will help to shallow out your angle of attack and provide great consistent pitching technique.

HGK's Course Report

The Cawder course has now fully re-opened back to its original layout for the start of the new season, though after the rain of the last few days, winter mats will still need to be used until we see a better spell of weather.

Once the winter mats are removed it please use the "mcdivot stakes" that are available free of charge on the 1st tees to secure your divot which will greatly enhance divot recovery.

The Greenkeeping winter programme is now coming to an end with only the turfing of drainage tracks required to complete this years improvements.

Over the next 4 to 6 weeks we will be trying to encourage growth by scarification and fertilising. so maintenance plans for the next month will include scarification on greens, tees and fairways helping to promote new growth, this task is very labour intensive so please be patient especially on fairways.

This year some greens have suffered from disease scarring and we are currently patching the worst areas to increase the recovery process until natural growth finishes this off.

Golf buggies will start normal hires on the Cawder course next month as we get drier weather

Practise area will now be fully operational and new practise nets at the shop are being put in for the start of the season.

Finally, I hope you all enjoy another great season in spectacular weather.

Here is where you could end up?

Cawder is very much out on it's own in Scottish Golf at the moment with it being the only Club to have 2 representatives in the Scottish Elite Training Squad.

Both Jamie Savage and Calum Fyfe have been wintering in Dubai and South Africa, both practising and representing their country in National Events.

Calum had a real strong run through to the Semi-Final of the South African Amateur Championship eventually succumbing to the eventual winner Daniel Young from Craigie Hill.

With Jamie also being shortlisted for the 20 man Walker Cup squad the season is certainly off to a flyer for both boys.

We wish them both well for a hugely successful season ahead.
