Open to: All current Exeter students of any year group and disciplines. Alumni Focus: What SSIS students do next...Spike van der Vliet-Firth (BA Politics, 2014) Tell us about what you are doing now and your future plans I am currently on the Local Government Graduate Scheme (ngdp) working in the London Borough of Lambeth. The ngdp is a 2-year management development programme, which is designed to develop future leaders in the public sector. I am provided challenging projects that seek to transform the organisation, and I am given amazing personal development opportunities. Based on my experience, I plan to stay in the sector and progress quickly into a management role. I have been surprised by the amount of opportunities to progress quickly in local authorities. My highlight of the year was being interviewed by the Guardian UK300 about my job. Did you do any work experience or internships while you were at Exeter which helped you get the position you are in? My work experience was crucial to me getting my current job, and in receiving a high level of work when I started. My employers were especially interested in the breadth of experience and the skills I gained from employment. I worked throughout my studies as a student ambassador. Being a support worker was amazing insight for my current role. I also did a 12-month GBP at Exeter after I graduated, which is an opportunity I would recommend to anyone. What advice would you give current students? 1) Persistence pays. If you want it, keep trying & keep applying 2) Work while you study. Build a breadth of experience 3) Start looking at job applications and descriptions to inform what you’ll need to achieve by the time you start applying 4) It’s not just about skills. Remember to sell why your character makes you a great colleague More information about the scheme can be found at www.ngdp.org.uk.
