Highlight: Brown’s 1st Annual Brain Fair

On Saturday, March 19, Sayles Hall will be bustling with exhibits and activities about the brain and mind. Labs from across campus have already signed up to bring interactive demonstrations about their research and about the basic principles that guide their work. A variety of student groups will also participate, as well as the amazing China Blue, new artist-in-residence at the Norman Prince Institute. Her interactive work MindDraw allows participants to create real-time digital art using EEG. Audiences will range widely from families (toddlers and K-12 invited), adults with no science background, and scientists from other fields.

If your lab does work that is in any way related to the brain (from DNA to mental health, evolution, and everything in between) we would love to have you participate. This event will be the highlight of Brain Week Rhode Island, a RI-wide celebration of international Brain Awareness Week. Don’t miss out on this exciting outreach opportunity! To participate, please e-mail victoria_heimer-mcginn@brown.edu and reserve a table for your lab.

If you are just interested in attending Brain Week events at Brown and beyond next month, please visit the event's website.

Epigenetics: Cancer and Beyond
Epigenetic processes are widely accepted to play an important role in cancer, and bromodomain extra-terminal (BET) proteins in particular have been heavily implicated in tumorigenesis by upregulating expression of oncogenic genes. BET proteins also have important roles in immune biology, cell growth, and differentiation. These roles underscore the therapeutic potential of targeting epigenetics for the treatment of complex disorders and bromodomain inhibitors, most notably those targeting BET families, have emerged as strong candidates. The objective of this symposium is to explore the therapeutic potential of pharmacologic modulation of the epigenome. The poster abstract deadline is March 10; for more information and to register, visit the event's website.

Comparative & Experimental Approaches to Aging Biology Research
The MDI Biological Laboratory in Maine will be presenting a new laboratory course this summer entitled Comparative & Experimental Approaches in Aging Biology Research. The course will emphasize the advantages of a comparative approach to addressing mechanisms relevant to the biology of human aging and students will work in established and emerging model systems including C. elegans, Drosophila, African turquoise killifish, and mice. This new course encompasses lectures by world-renowned senior researchers as well as laboratory experiments led by early career investigators who are doing cutting-edge research in the field of aging biology. Senior graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty are encouraged to apply. Maximum enrollment is 16, and acceptance to the course is on a rolling basis until March 1, so candidates should apply earlier rather than later. Applicants from an IDeA state who are accepted for the course will be fully covered for the tuition cost.
