Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington have reached an agreement to further develop tertiary music education.
Effective immediately, the current courses and activities offered by Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music (NZSM) will transfer to Victoria, while Massey will develop a commercial music programme that will be offered in 2016, in association with NZSM.
In total, 34 staff will transfer to Victoria. All current students will be able to complete their studies and receive a jointly awarded qualification. New students will continue to enrol in NZSM courses through Victoria.
Massey University Vice-Chancellor Steve Maharey and Victoria University Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford agree that this development offers new and exciting opportunities for students, staff, key stakeholders and the Wellington community and will enable both universities to build on what the NZSM has achieved in teaching, research and community engagement during the past eight years.
“This agreement will enable Victoria to streamline current NZSM operations and will deliver many benefits for its staff and students. At the same time Massey will develop a programme that complements both what NZSM offers and the programmes offered by the College of Creative Arts on its Wellington campus.
“We would like to thank those who participated in the consultation around this change and were heartened by the support received for the original proposal. We can all see the benefits of each institution being able to concentrate on its fields of speciality, while continuing to collaborate,” the Vice-Chancellors said.
