The Summer Season Begins: New Arrivals #1 – Great Values From Just About Everywhere ..
|
|
|
Our current summer picks
|
The weather’s warming up, and dozens of new wines have arrived at World Wine. Perhaps the economy is causing mild consternation, but our first summer arrivals feature some sensational values.
Life’s too short to drink banal, industrial wines – hence we select and sell small production wines – wines we enjoy and like, which allow the budget-conscious consumer to drink delicious, terroir-expressive wines at reasonable prices. (We had to get the word “terroir” in there somewhere).
Please take a moment to peruse our first summer arrivals, and stay tuned, as the rest of 2011 will see more exciting wines from World Wine.

Summer Reds
|
|
Summer reds for us are about drinkability and refreshment - younger, lighter-bodied wines with lower tannins and higher acidity.
Some reds respond well to being slightly chilled in summer - the Rosés mentioned above are naturals for chilling, and also the Tempranillos below on hotter days:
Chapel Hill Il Vescovo Tempranillo $19 displays an exotic bouquet of mulberries and fennel seeds further supported by a rustic palate brimming with liquorice flavours and tingling savoury ...
Paxton Vineyards Tempranillo $19 Fragrant, earthy, sage, thyme with hints of stone fruit...
Cascabel Joven Tempranillo $20 With grapes picked slightly earlier, with the inention of retaining fresher flavours and higher acid, while avoiding harsh tannins...
What’s the best way to chill a red? The fridge works, but the quickest way is with an ice bucket – fifteen minutes in ice water is all you need, and keeping the bottle in there once opened will keep it chilled.
If you are looking for a red to complement a thick juicy grilled steak, hamburgers or meats cooked in a smoker, Syrah/Shiraz are ideal with their fruity yet peppery and smoky flavours.
Eden Road The Long Road Shiraz $26 A previous winner (2008) Jimmy Watson Trophy - and winemaker Nick Spencer thinks this is his best yet - plump, spicy, expressive, site-expressive and ...
The spiritual home of Syrah is the Côtes du Rhône (English: Slopes or Hills of the Rhône) in France, from where we offer the:
Yves Cuilleron Syrah $26 - a wine expressive of small red fruits. On the palate: balanced, supple and gourmand, with a silky texture. Serve at ...
and a terrific Syrah blend:
Domaine la Réméjeanne Côtes du Rhône Les Chevrefeuilles $24 Ruby red colour, with a nose of fresh fruits, liquorice, red and dark berry... If you ring us up and ask for this one, just call it the Honeysuckle (which is what Les Chevrefeuilles means) and we'll know exactly what you mean.
And we finish off with two Malbecs, possibly the most steak-friendly red wine ever invented:
Trumpeter Malbec $20 From Mendoza in Argentia, inky and dense with attractive berry aromas and a touch of cinnamon and sweet spice ...
Ferngrove Orchard King Malbec $24 Matured in mainly new French oak ...
