Highland Creek Green Team - March Update

Hello Highland Creek Green Team,

The list of Green Team volunteers has been growing. In order to keep the list organized, I've decided to start using this new e-mail format. Watch for an update e-mail at the beginning of each month this year. The links at the top of the e-mail allow you to easily view the web version, update preferences, or unsubscribe from the list.

If you know anyone who is interested in volunteering with us in the Highland Creek watershed, they can sign up to receive these updates as well.

February Wrap-up

February was a great month for the Green Team. Some highlights include:

  • Learning about building outdoors skating rinks from the Environmental Science Society at Centennial College. A few of us participated in their Family Skate Day and it was a great event! Try out the rink at Morningside Park while the weather is still cold.
  • Preparing for the L'Amoreaux Forest Winter Walk with the Friends of the North Scarborough Green Loop. The walk took place this past weekend and was quite successful. The photo at the top of this e-mail was taken during this walk. As you can see, it was a cold, bright, sunny day.
  • Attending the Scarborough Waterfront Project Public Information Centre #2. If you would like to learn more about this project and add your input to the online workbook please visit the website.
  • Participating in the Ward 38 Park People meeting. It was great to see so many park enthusiasts discussing projects like the Scarborough Butterfly Trail and brainstorming ways to improve parks in Scarborough.

Upcoming Activites in March

This month, the Green Team will be participating in events and working on plans for spring activities. If you would like to be involved with any of these projects please let me know.

  • This Saturday, March 7 several of us will be attending the Toronto Park Summit. This is an inspiring annual event that showcases interesting park projects from across Canada.
  • On Saturday, March 28 we will have a booth at the Scarborough Seedy Saturday and Green Fair. This is a very fun annual event. We'll be providing information about Highland Creek watershed and making seed balls.
  • We will continue to work on Connect with the Creek blog. Help us tell the story of Highland Creek by submitting any stories or photos of interest.
  • We've been working very hard on our self-guided walk series. If you walk in a particular area of the watershed you might want to help out by reviewing and editing one of our walk guides.
  • If you have any suggestions to improve our website please let me know. Recently I've added a list of citizen science opportunities. Any suggestions for additions would be appreciated.

Thank you for continuing to participate with the Highland Creek Green Team. There are many activities coming up this spring for Earth Day and the opening of the Milliken Park rain garden. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
