Editor's note

Yanis Varoufakis has more experience than most of the cut and thrust that marks high-pressure talks with the EU. So what about the Brexit negotiations? While British MPs debate the so-called great repeal bill in parliament, he writes that “clueless” UK politicians and EU bureaucrats are doing no one any favours. But the former Greek finance minister can still see hope for a Brexit transition that gives room for Europe and the UK, and builds a progressive future for both.

Of the many films that were made in the wake of the attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001, none are as enduring as Spike Lee’s 25th Hour, argues Arin Keeble. The film, which started shooting before 9/11 and told the story of a convicted drug dealer facing jail, never intended to chart that event. But in capturing New York through its period of trauma through this lens, it managed to escape the pitfalls of ideology and American exceptionalism so notable in other films.

A recently published report into racial bias in the criminal justice system shocked many. Not Victoria Anderson, who has spent the past few months in UK prisons listening to inmates’ stories. She argues that we must hear more from those in jail if the prison crisis is ever to be overcome. And while there is a growing focus on suicide prevention in prisons, offenders on probation are also at high risk of suicide and need tailored support.
