Research Update

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s April 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below are some of the report's highlights:

Imports

  • Imported beer volume decreased by 7.8% in April 2017 compared to April 2016, indicating continued imbalances in distributor inventories.
  • Import volumes declined compared to last April among each of the top four source countries: Mexico, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Canada.
  • Draft imports increased by 10% in April, but they remain down year-to-date.
  • Imports of non-alcohol beer (NA) declined by 16% in April 2017 compared to April 2016.
  • Cider imports were up 31% in April 2017 compared to April 2016, and they are now up 15% year-to-date.

Exports

  • Export volume declined in April from March following three straight months of double-digit growth.
  • NA export volumes are up triple digits both in April 2017 compared to April 2016 as well as year-to-date.
  • Cider exports declined slightly in April from March and are now flat year-to-date.
