St. Mary Maternity Hospital: Introduction to SPSS and Statistical Analysis
St. Mary Maternity Hospital, a nonprofit organization, had a mission to deliver healthy babies at normal weight and to offer medical care to expectant mothers regardless of their financial situation. This case demonstrates the value of staying focused on achieving a mission statement. To achieve the hospital’s mission, it was important to identify factors that could affect the weight and health of babies. This case demonstrates how a few factors related to birth could result in insightful and actionable recommendations for doctors, administrators, and policy makers.

This case is suitable for undergraduate, graduate, and management development programs related to statistical analysis. The purpose of the case is to teach introductory-level statistics using SPSS statistical software. This case is about not only number-crunching exercises, but also developing insights into what the numbers are not telling us.

Specifically, the case has the following objectives:

  • To identify relevant factors (variables) that can impact birth weight.
  • To teach introductory-level statistical analysis, including correlations, X2 Test, t-test – comparisons of means, regression analysis, and ANOVA – and analysis of variance.
  • To teach the fundamentals of SPSS software.
  • To illustrate the difficulty in collecting data on a sensitive issue in a health care setting.

Agile Electric: Quality Issues in a Global Supply Chain
The case describes the evolution of a global multi-tiered supply chain involving one of the world’s largest automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), its tier 1 supplier — Automek, a U.S.-based global corporation — and the tier 2, tier 3, and tier 4 suppliers based in India.

The case is designed for a course in operations management. It can also be used for a short-term training program on supply chain management. The instructor can focus on the risks that both buyer and supplier face in a global supply chain and the various factors that should be considered by both sides before committing to a relationship. The case can also be used to analyze the necessity, significance, and methodologies for the transfer of (process) knowledge between buyer and supplier.

Specifically, the following objectives can be accomplished:

  • Understand the risk of incurring major liabilities in an international supply chain, resulting from Western business practices of passing on liability, field failures, warranties, delivery defaults, and carefully worded legal contracts. If a supplier were to understand these risks and incorporate them in the costs, product costs would move upwards significantly.
  • Highlight the consequences of subverting established procedures such as advanced product quality planning in developing new sources of supply.
  • Understand the importance of process knowledge and the internal quality practices of members in a supply chain. This includes the importance of supplier assessments and protecting oneself through enhancement of controls at suppliers’ end and/or one’s own end.
  • Highlight the importance of supplier development and the willing participation of both parties (buyer and seller) in the development process. The case discussion may be used to emphasize the concept of long-term co-prosperity as essential to supplier development.

Subprime Tsunami on Indian Shores: Crisis Hits ICICI
The collapse of Lehman Brothers, a major Wall Street investment bank, sent shockwaves through financial markets as global liquidity dried up and investor confidence reached an all-time low. Banks with exposure to complex financial instruments in high-debt environments were considered particularly vulnerable. ICICI Bank — India’s largest private-sector bank with maximum international exposure among Indian banks — was hit by rumours about its exposure to Lehman assets. Solvency fears drove its depositors to withdraw large sums of money and the bank’s stock value started to erode. ICICI’s management responded to the crisis by initiating an intense public relations effort. The public relations effort had barely concluded when another episode of stock collapse and customer withdrawal started.

After discussion and analysis of the case, students will be able to:

  • Appreciate the need to identify and track pre-crisis indicators.
  • Learn to prepare strategic communication responses to crises.
  • Appreciate that communication in the “you” age occurs in a context of multiple simultaneous local narratives and that there is a shift in the basis of organizations’ legitimacy.
  • Learn how corporations can minimize the damage done by crises through environmental scanning, crisis anticipation, and strategic communications planning.

The case can be used in:

  • MBA/postgraduate management courses on corporate communication. The case can be used as part of a class discussion on crisis management and/or crisis communication. It can also be used to provide a social media orientation to communication professionals.
  • Executive management training programs on corporate communication, crisis communication, new media communication, and social media strategies.

It can also be used as preparation for participants in student-run initiatives in developing countries. Registered academics can Log In to download the accompanying teaching note.

Plagiarism and Discipline
When a professor finds out that one of the groups in her Management Information Systems (MIS) MBA class had plagiarized part of their assignment from other sources, she did not know what to do. Plagiarism was not an unusual situation to her; in the past, she had always reported it. Her university also took plagiarism seriously; students who were caught were expelled from the university. But this situation seemed a little different, and she wondered whether reporting the students and having them expelled was the sensible approach this time.

This complementary case is designed to support workshops and teaching on the subject of teaching and learning with cases. This case emphasizes issues of dealing with student plagiarism on a case analysis assignment.
