LOUISVILLE, Ky. – John Boehner, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, will discuss jobs, the economy and the institution of the House Oct. 31 at the University of Louisville. His public talk through the McConnell Center's fall lecture series is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on UofL's Belknap Campus. His colleagues elected him as speaker in 2010. He previously served as House minority and majority leader. As speaker, he has encouraged the open exchange of ideas, robust debate and fair voting practices in the House. He also has been central in ongoing efforts to address the nation's budget deficit, maintaining that cutting government spending and removing barriers to private-sector job creation are key to economic growth. He chaired the House Education and Workforce committee from 2001 to 2006, championing legislation to reform the nation's 30-year-old pension laws and co-writing a bill that established the first private school choice program in the District of Columbia. A 1968 graduate of Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Boehner worked several jobs to pay his way through Xavier University.
