Welcome from the Dean of Enrollment

Happy New Year!

I am delighted to send you our first issue of Barnard’s Counselor Newsletter. I hope this e-communication will help you stay informed about what's new at Barnard. We plan to send an issue in January, May, and September, key points in the admissions counseling process.

Please feel free to share relevant information with your students and with colleagues who may not already be on our mailing list. Colleagues may sign up for future newsletters on our Counselor Page.  Also, let us know what you think. Any and all feedback is welcome.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Gill Fondiller '88
Dean of Enrollment Management

Reflections on Early Decision

Although Barnard College's Early Decision pool has traditionally been modest, we have seen incredible growth over the last 5 years.  We encourage eager students to apply early, but we favor an approach that's about love, not strategy.  Students who have selected Early Decision have often visited, know current Barnard women or alumnae, and are 110% sure Barnard is the right choice for them.  More on Early Decision here.

Pre-College Programs

Barnard's Pre-College Programs provide great insight for rising junior and senior girls considering New York City or women's colleges for their college list. Six programs ensure they can find diversity in their course selections and unique program compositions. Students may immerse themselves in two classes as part of our Summer in the City program, sample one course during our Liberal Arts Intensive, focus on performance and theory during Dance in the City, hone leadership skills with the Young Women’s Leadership Institute, dive into the sciences during the Summer Science Seminar, or build their brand with Entrepreneurs-in-Training,

Who is my best contact in Admissions?

At Barnard, each staff member is assigned to a geographic region, distributed both to develop regional knowledge and continuity and to ensure application reading volume remains manageable.  Above all, we try to encourage the understanding of regional context, which we consider central to a holistic review process.  If you haven't met your regional counselor, feel free to reach out to her with questions about Barnard or your applicants.  She would be happy to make your acquaintance.  Contact us.

Global Symposia

Barnard College of Columbia University presents The Sixth Annual Global Symposium

Barnard’s Global Symposia series was launched in 2009 with four main goals in mind:  to provide a dynamic forum for discussion of women's issues in regions where such opportunities do not readily exist, to create a network of women leaders from around the world, to inspire young women and spark their own leadership potential, and to provide an opportunity for Barnard, as an American college, to learn from women in other parts of the world and bring their stirring stories back to our students.

Symposia have taken place in Beijing, China (2009), Dubai, UAE (2010), Johannesburg, South Africa (2011), Mumbai, India (2012), Sao Paolo, Brazil (2013) and will take place in Shanghai, China in 2014.  More on the Symposia can be found here.

EVENTS

Fourth Annual Athena Film Festival

SAVE THE DATE
February 6-9, 2014
New York City

The Athena Film Festival — a celebration of women and leadership through film — was founded by Barnard College's Athena Center for Leadership Studies.  It is an engaging weekend of feature films, documentaries and shorts that highlight women’s leadership in real life and the fictional world.  The four-day festival, which includes conversations with directors and Hollywood stars and workshops for filmmakers, has quickly established itself as one of the most prestigious festivals of its kind.  If you find yourself in the neighborhood of Morningside Heights during the dates of the Festival, we would love to have you join us.
