It was nice to meet so many enthusiastic skiers during Ski Expo a few weeks ago and a pleasant surprise to observe that the interest for back country skiing (off-pist) is growing so fast.
It requires a bit of travelling to go all the way to Canada to ski, but it is worth it! There are a few important factors to mention, which explains why it makes a difference to ski in the Columbia Mountains versus other Mountain areas in the world.
1/ Pacific weather systems bring loads of snow, once they have travelled the 500 km from the coast of B.C towards Rocky Mountains. We get up to 20 meters of snow every season and sometimes more.
2/ The snow crystals consist of less water, which is why it is often called “Champagne Powder”
3/ Columbia Mountains is unique for its tree skiing. The tree level goes all they way to 2000 meters and consist of both pine and cedar trees. This terrain makes it possible to ski more than in any other Heli-ski area in the world, because our skilled pilots can fly even if it snows, while having good visual contact with the trees. And the incredible glades you will find in the tree areas are just amazing!
This does not exclude the fact that we do have our amazing high alpine skiing as well throughout the season.
On top of all this CMH has been running a Heli-Skiing operation - being the inventor of it - for more than 45 years, so we believe we know what our ski-guests want.
