Kingswood College Where Potential Soars Kingswood College

Message from the President

This month I encourage you to be involved, and help make a difference within the College community.  Help build connections!

The Wyvernian Association AGM is to be held next week.  I encourage you to nominate to join the Committee.  If you can’t commit to being on Committee maybe you can help with preparation for your Reunion, assist with inspiring some of our current students, or come along to some of the College events.  Your input and involvement is important and valued.

Our featured Wyvernian in this edition is Annette Subhani (nee Davis) Class of 1984.  Annette talks about her ties with Kingswood College as a student and now as a parent of a student.  It was great to chat with Annette who has her 30 year Reunion this year.  Since leaving the College she has been busy and we thank Annette for spending the time to share some of her story.

Reunions!  Those that have attended their reunions at the start of the year have all reported having a good time…and there are still a few for this year!  If yours is coming up I encourage you to make an effort and come along.  The more the merrier!  So twist the arm of your fellow classmates to help make it a memorable night!

Let’s cook!  The College has commenced its scholarship cycle kicking off with the ScholarChef (Hospitality Scholarship).  If you have a budding chef here is a chance for them to showcase their talent and win a Scholarship!

In this edition we also put the spot light on some of the current student’s sporting and academic achievements.

Finally - Let us know.  Maybe we should be featuring you or one of your classmates in the eNews, or there may be a particular teacher that you would like us to.  This is your College and your Association so please contact us with ideas and/or enquire about how you can become involved.

I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you around.

Stuart Castle

President

Wyvernians AGM

The Association is seeking expressions of interest from Alumni members to join the Committee and assist with strengthening this part of the College community.  The Committee has recently adopted a new Charter which will be used as a strategic base on which the future direction and activities will be set.  The Charter includes areas of Networking, Communication, Mentoring/Inspiring, Fundraising/Philanthropy, and Social Activities.

If you would like to nominate for the Committee, or to be involved in some other form, please email Stuart Castle  (President) or call on 0419 772 600.

ScholarChef

Do you know someone who is a whizz in the kitchen?

A budding chef who likes to whip up a storm between homework and dinner? If you think they’ve got what it takes to be Kingswood College’s next ScholarChef we’d love to hear from them!

This year we've expanded the program to include applications for students entering Years 7, 10 and 11 in 2015.  The applicant(s) assessed as cooking the best dish against other applicants for the same year level of entry will be awarded a Hospitality Scholarship at Kingswood College.

All they have to do is send us a five-minute movie cooking their favourite recipe from the start detailing the dish they’re creating and talking about how they’re doing it through to plating up, as well as telling us why they love cooking.  The movie doesn't have to be academy award-winning quality - it can simply be filmed on a smart phone or other device and emailed to us!

All applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges and selected applicants will be invited to the College to attend a ScholarChef cook-off assessment morning on Saturday 9 August 2014. On this day the selected applicants will cook a nominated dish within a 90 minute timeframe with the assistance of a Year 11 Kingswood College Hospitality student. The dish created by each applicant will then be assessed against other applicants for the same year level of entry by a panel of judges including the Principal, Head of Technology, and an experienced chef in industry.

Celebrating 125 years in 2015

In 2015, Kingswood College will celebrate 125 years of educating students.

There will be many opportunities and events throughout the year to celebrate this major milestone, and we'd love all our Alumni to be involved.

Wyvernian profile - Annette Subhani

Annette Subhani, née Davis attended Kingswood College Senior School from 1983, completing Year 12 in 1984.

Annette has strong family links to the College as both of her brothers David (who is now the Victorian Health Minister) and John (who starred in 'HMS Pinafore') had attended Kingswood College and left prior to her arrival. Her father, Adrian Davis was School Council Treasurer during this period.

During the first year at Kingswood College (1983) Annette gained great confidence thanks to the more independent learning environment on offer. The broader, artistic program was excellent, and she played the role of Mrs Bedwin in the school musical 'Oliver'. The production experience was a highlight of her time at school.

Chinese language success

Year 11 student Imogen Hanrahan won second place in the Chinese Speaking and Performance Competition held at Melbourne Grammar School Friday 23 May.

Thirteen contestants from Victoria and Tasmania participated in the intense competition. The competition consisted of two components, a 2.5-minute prepared speech on the topic ‘My Chinese Dream’ and a 2-minute cultural performance. Imogen’s speech was ‘China Trip and My Chinese Dream’ and her beautiful voice won the judges over. Weeks of hard work paid off.

Imogen has now been selected to take part in the 7th international Hanyuqiao Chinese Competition in Kunming in October 2014.

Imogen is the fourth Kingswood College student in the past five years to be selected to participate in the Hanyuqiao Chinese Competition.

Congratulations Imogen.

Kingswood College wins the EISM Athletics

On Wednesday 30 April at Lakeside Stadium Kingswood College won the Inter-school EISM Athletics Carnival! It was a great effort from our team on a day where the weather went from heavy rain to streaming sunshine. Our Physical Education staff were fantastic in organising, motivating and supporting our students who clearly enjoyed the day, and did their personal bests. The sense of team and focus was a pleasure to observe. Congratulations to all involved!
