2013 Murdoch Travelling Fellowships
Five VCA graduates were awarded The Keith and Elisabeth Murdoch Travelling Fellowships for theatre, music and visual art worth $70,000 at an award ceremony held on 3 October. The 2013 recipients are: Aviva Endean (Music), Shelly Lauman and Glyn Roberts (theatre), and Matthew Greaves and Hamish Macdonald (art). Awarded biennially, the fellowships are designed to allow young artists to travel and study overseas at this particularly important period in their career.

Contemporary Plays Season
25 October - 1 November
Presented by Acting Company 2013 and production students, the Contemporary Plays Season features the Australian premiere of two strange, surprising and witty plays from the internationally renowned experimental theatre companies: Goat Island and the Ontological-Hysteric Theatre. It's An Earthquake In My Heart by Goat Island, directed by Robert Walton; and Eddie Goes To Poetry City by Richard Foreman and directed by Richard Murphet.

Non-Western Music Gala Ensemble Concert
Friday 25 October, 5.00pm
Students from across the University will perform an uplifting concert of music featuring the Non-Western Music ensembles at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Involving a cast of hundreds and spanning traditions thousands of years old, this concert will feature performances from the Chinese Ensemble, Shakuhachi Ensemble, World Music Choir and the African Drum & Dance Ensemble.

Graduation Dance Season
14 - 21 November
Graduating dance students and production students have been studying under three guest choreographers this semester including Frances Rings and VCA alumni Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal (Master Choreography, 2009) and Feng Feng Wang (Master of Choreography, 2005). The program celebrates the virtuosity, artistry and energy of graduating dance students, marking the culmination of three years intensive training and their transition into the dance profession.

Maestro Mehta receives Honorary Doctorate
Globally renowned musical conductor Maestro Zubin Mehta received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Melbourne in a ceremony at Government House on 30 September. Maestro Mehta was in Melbourne to conduct the Australian World Orchestra (AWO), which comprises Australia’s finest musicians drawn from orchestras across the world. 25 former students playing with the AWO were also offered an Honorary Fellowship by the VCA & MCM (pictured).

Rosemary & John Hopkins Award
Professor John Hopkins OBE AM DMus (Hon) died on Tuesday 1 October 2013 in Melbourne aged 86. He will be remembered, both nationally and internationally, for the profound impact he made on Australian orchestral music. In addition to his many achievements as a conductor, he also managed to make an equally rich and full contribution as a great leader, teacher and educator. Donations can be made to the Rosemary & John Hopkins Award for a Conductor of any age, to assist with a youth or community music project.

New music theatre work
Music theatre work A Little Touch of Chaos by award-winning team of writer, actor and singer James Millar and composer Peter Rutherford has won the Victorian College of the Arts’ New Work Music Theatre Project to develop the musical further. The winning team will receive $38 000 and a two week workshop in February 2014. The show will be performed at the newly refurbished Grant Street Theatre in Southbank by third year Music Theatre students in July 2014.
