Click here February 2020 Impact Newsletter CPC Meets with 50 Elected Officials During On February 25th, over 40 CPC staff and community members traveled to Albany to meet with elected officials and advocate for immigrant justice and representation for marginalized communities. Throughout the day, CPC met with more than 50 offices of state senators and assembly members, shared stories of CPC's work, and advocated for our state policy agenda. EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong. CPC Testifies About Childhood Literacy and ELLs at Youth Services Committee HearingMary Cheng, CPC Childhood Development Services Director, testified about the value of literacy programming at our 11 afterschool sites and how the benefits impact the lives of young English language learners and their families during the NYC Council Youth Services Committee hearing on January 14th. CPC BEST - Live Your Best (Financial) Life in 2020On January 22nd, CPC collaborated with Eva Lee, Market Director Trainee at JPMorgan Chase, to provide a financial literacy workshop to educate community members as part of our Business Exploration Student Tract (BEST) Mentorship Program. CPC LEAD Celebrates MLK, Jr. on Trip to Washington, D.C. CPC LEAD students from the High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies went to Washington D.C. from January 21st to 23rd to visit many of the national monuments, Smithsonian museums, and the Capitol Building. CPC and Elected Officials Call for Full Funding of Adult Literacy Education State Assemblyman Ron Kim, representatives from Senator Jessica Ramos's office, and Lena Cohen from United Neighborhood Houses joined CPC on February 20th to advocate for full funding of Adult Literacy Education (ALE) programs in New York. CPC Chrystie Street Advances to Lego League Semi-FinalsOn February 1st, 11 fifth graders from Chrystie Street School-Age Child Care Center represented their group and CPC in the DYCD-sponsored FIRST Lego League Qualifier. In Memory: Madeline Brown, Beloved Teacher's Aide from Jacob RiisCPC is sad to announce the unexpected passing of Madeline Brown, a teacher's aide and a cornerstone at Jacob Riis Early Childhood Center and the community. FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age. CPC Service Learning Program Collects 400 Toys and Books for CPC's After School Programs and the Salvation ArmyCPC Service Learning Initiative's holiday project collected 400 toys and books for community members. The presents were delivered to CPC's Chrystie Street School-Age Child Center and CPC's Early Childhood Center at Little Star of Broome Street. Update on Fire at Our Chinatown Senior Center We want to thank our community members and partners for the outpouring of support and kindness as we respond to the devastating fire at 70 Mulberry Street which has led to the displacement of hundreds of our seniors. Unfortunately, as of March 3rd, we have not been able to access the space and have no definitive timeline for when or where CPC Chinatown Senior Center will be restored. CPC x McKinsey: Goodie Bags for Seniors In celebration of Lunar New Year, staff from McKinsey & Company took time out of their busy day on January 31st to learn about CPC’s Hong Ning Wellness Program, the significance of Lunar New Year, and prepare goodie bags for the 200 residents. Congratulations to CPC Brooklyn Community Services Winter Naturalization Class!Quarterly Naturalization classes are held in partnership with Office for New American (ONA) Opportunity Center at Brooklyn Community Center. Our winter cycle started on December 2nd, 2019 and lasted 10 weeks, ending on February 5th, 2020. CPC's Lunar New Year Brings Together 1,000 to Celebrate Our CommunitiesRaising over $575,000, a host of celebrated and prominent New York figures joined the stage with CPC's President & CEO Wayne Ho, members of the Board and the staff at the time-honored Jing Fong Restaurant on February 27, 2020. CPC in the News: Dispelling Fear and Myths About CoronavirusThroughout February, CPC leadership, including Wayne Ho, President and CEO, Mary Cheng, Director of CPC Childhood Development Services, Steve Mei, Director of CPC Brooklyn Community Services, Carlyn Cowen, Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer, were interviewed by the media to dispel rumors about the coronavirus. Joint Statement on Public Charge from Wayne Ho of CPC and Dr. Mitchell Katz of NYC Health & Hospitals On February 24th, the federal rule on public charge went into effect. In response, Wayne Ho, President and CEO of CPC and Dr. Mitch Katz, President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals released a joint statement. Many immigrant New Yorkers, including immigrants that currently have green cards, are not subject to this rule, and many services remain available to all New Yorkers no matter where they come from.
