STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Susie Reed, RN

While I feel I get exceptional results with the treatments I provide, it is important to realize that I do not possess the “magic wand” for perfection, but I do have the expertise to develop a treatment plan that will maximize your procedure outcome.  Basically, I can improve an individual’s appearance or outcome about 70% through treatments alone.  The other 30% depends on other services at Hull Aesthetics that compliment facial rejuvenation, the patient’s lifestyle and home skincare regime.

First, I feel it’s is important for people to know that I do not perform or recommend any treatment that I have not experienced myself.  I understand from a patient’s perspective-how they feel during and after treatment, because I have been the patient!

With that being said, I have a treatment I recommend for just about everyone desiring overall skin rejuvenation…Dermapen.

I received my first Dermapen treatment from a colleague in Oklahoma in September 2015.  I was looking to add a new service at Hull Aesthetics other than chemical peels and lasers to treat acne scars, minimize pores, fine lines around mouth/eyes and improve radiance of overall skin.  Dermapen had great reviews.   I was also excited that Dermapen has minimal downtime and long lasting results to compliment treatments we already provide.

Thirty minutes before treatment, a topical numbing cream was applied for my comfort during the procedure.  I personally thought the treatment tickled in most places.  The forehead was slightly more sensitive, but definitely tolerable.  Immediately after the treatment, my face looked sunburned and felt tight-but again, no discomfort.  My skin looked amazing the next day, but the next several days to follow, I experienced a little flaking around the mouth, skin felt rough in texture and was dry for about 5 days.  After about 5 days, I received a lot of unsolicited compliments on my skin.

I knew after my treatment that this was a service we wanted to provide at Hull Aesthetics and in November we started offering Dermapen.  I highly recommend this treatment for anyone desiring to improve their skin regardless of your age or whether you get Botox or dermal fillers.  All the practitioners at Hull Aesthetics are trained with Dermapen.  Ask us today for a personalized treatment plan.

The 70 | 30 Difference

Getting the most from your treatment and skincare regime

Like Susie says in her Staff Spotlight, treatments can improve your appearance by about 70%, but the other 30% depends on your skincare regime and your lifestyle. We believe in our treatments and procedures that we offer at Hull Aesthetics, but all of us know that maintaining our results is a vital part of our aftercare.

Throughout 2016, we will be focusing on how improving your skincare regimen can enhance the results of your procedures. By maximizing the benefits of skincare products, we may not only lengthen the time between but also boost the outcome of your treatments.

One of the most popular procedures we offer are fillers. These substances can be injected into the skin to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, plump lips, repair various facial imperfections, improve scars, and elevate deep folds. The result is a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Fillers like Voluma, Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero Balance are composed of hyaluronic acid (HA). This is a natural substance found in the body that acts as your body's hydrator. When injected into the skin, HA holds in moisture, adding volume while softening and hydrating the skin. As we age, the amount of HA in the skin decreases, which makes fillers an important step in our beauty regimen.

This year, SkinMedica introduced HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator to their product line. This topical treatment product supports the skin's natural ability to replenish hyaluronic acid, delivering both immediate and long-term results. Comprised of a mix of five HA forms, HA5 instantly hydrates the skin, smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improving skin texture and roughness. The best part? It keeps working all day and is safe for all skin types.

HA5 is not a moisturizer, but a hydrator. Like fillers, it adds water to the skin, which helps combat aging. By adding HA5 twice a day to your daily skincare regimen, you are immediately improving both your short and long term results from fillers. This is the 70 | 30 Difference.

Brilliant Distinction members get $25 off HA5 while supplies last.

Planning the perfect time for treatment

By: Millie Roberson, RN

As a provider I am often asked when and what treatments should I start during the year.  Although every patient’s treatment plan varies depending on their primary concerns, skin type and budget, there is definitely a time line for treatment.  Many procedures take time to show full results or have limitations post treatment that need to be taken in to account.

MONTHLY SKIN CARE

The first step to any treatment plan is monthly skin care and maintenance.  A few simple things can be done year round to compliment and maintain results. Light chemical peels, microderms, dermaplanes, facials and Hydrafacials promote skin health.  These treatments help with overall texture and tone. With any treatment in the summer, use precaution when in the sun. Use a good sunscreen and avoid prolong sun exposure to treated areas. Additionally, a good skin care regimen and daily sunscreen should be used year round.

SPRING INTO SUMMER

Everyone wants to have a summer ready body! There are a variety of body treatments including CoolSculpting and VelaShape that can help you achieve you goals. Think ahead and start scheduling these treatments in January and the early spring. CoolSculpting freezes that hard to work off fat.  Over the course of three months the body metabolizes the damaged fat cells and reduces fat in the area of treatment.  VelaShape smooths and reduces cellulite.

FALL INTO WINTER

Fall and winter are the busiest times of year. Laser hair reduction, for treatment of wanted hair, is one of the most popular treatments offered.  This treatment is best on untanned skin that is as close to its natural color as possible. Skin will be sun sensitive after treatment and it is best to avoid prolonged sun exposure for several days post treatment. Spider veins on the leg are also treated in winter. Sclerotherapy or Vascular Laser will make the appearance of the vessels worse before they get better. During the 2-3 week healing time, you must wear compression hose daily.  Both treatments require 3-4 treatments so that could put you in compression hose for the duration of the winter months. Fall and winter are also the best times to rejuvenate skin texture and correct aging.  Medium to deep chemical peels will exfoliate older skin and exposure of new skin can be harmed by sun exposure. Dermapen, a microneedling device, can also be used to rejuvenate the skin. This treatment can also cause sun sensitivity. Treatment of brown spots and erythema is done with the IPL. This light based treatment can also leave you sun sensitive. Sublative is an additional option for rejuvenation.  It uses radio frequency energy to stimulate collagen and cell regrowth, again it can cause sun sensitivity so avoid sun exposure for at least one week post treatment.

What Message are Your Lips Sending?

By: Susie Reed, RN, Injector

It’s no secret the lips are one of my favorite things to inject on the face!  They are like the icing on the cake.  No one likes to see a cake without frosting, and no injector wants to see a face with untreated lips!  The lips are one of the main focal points on the face that someone looks at when they are talking to you and they always send a message.  Are you happy, sad, angry, young or old?  Often your mouth sends a different message than how you actually feel!  What message are you sending?

Lips come in all shapes and sizes.  Some of us are blessed with full, pouty lips and some are very thin.  A pretty lip has a “white roll” along the border where light is reflected from the lip. With age, we lose that distinctive border volume.  The corners of the mouth also lose structural support with age and will start to turn down.  Lines around the mouth will begin to develop too.  “Smoker’s lines” can develop even if you have never touched a cigarette—I see it every day!

While I do treat individuals desiring just a little more pout, I treat the aging lip more frequently.  I love giving people a more natural, refreshed looked. It’s all about balance to the face and lips.  Like an artist with paint, every injector has their favorite product they like to use.  The product I chose depends on the areas that need correction and my client’s desires.

My favorite products for lip injections are Juvederm, Restylane Silk or Belotero Balance. If someone wants volume in their lips, I will use Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. If someone has a thinner lip and they are timid about lip augmentation, I will go with Juvederm Ultra XC or Restylane Silk. Restylane Silk is my preferred choice if someone only wants reduction of soft radiating lip lines.  Belotero Balance is preferred when the lines are coarser.   I often will use a combination of products if there are multiple concerns.  To the right you will see several of my client’s before and after photos of varying ages, lip volume and wrinkles.

Many people are afraid of lip injections and have a lot of questions….

1. Does it hurt?

A. Every precaution is used to relieve discomfort.  Ice packs and topical numbing medication can be used prior as well as there is numbing medication in the products themselves.

2. Will anyone be able to tell I have had something done?

A. For the first 24-48 hours there can be some bruising and swelling and tenderness at injection site and there will most likely be some firmness. In the end you should not see the product-no lumps or bumps, you should not feel the product and you should not have tenderness.  If done correctly, lips with injections don't feel any different than real lips.

3. What are the side effects?

A. Some slight bruising and bleeding at the site of injection is normal and expected. The bruises should fade after five to seven days.. To decrease your chances of bruising, 7  days prior to your procedure, avoid painkillers (except Tylenol), aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, Vitamin E, and red wine which tend to thin the blood and make you more susceptible to bruising.(Please contact your Dr before stopping any medications)  Sometimes a laser can also be used to help the bruising resolve quicker.

Anyone who has a history of cold sores should take an antiviral medication before and after the procedure. Injections could trigger a cold sore.

4. What if I do not like the injections?

A. You can completely erase these fillers if you don't like how your lips turn out for whatever reason.  An enzyme, hyaluronidase, can be injected and the product will dissolve.

5.  Will my lips look worse if I stop getting injections?

A. If you eventually decide to stop getting injections, your lips will return to their original state. Contrary to what you might think, your lips will not turn into saggy, wrinkly skin bags. However, the fillers that was injected into your lips has been proven to jump-start more hyaluronic acid production at the site of the injection, so your lips could naturally remain a bit larger, thanks to the previous injections.

I know this is a lot to take in and you may still be nervous about treating your lips.  But I want you to stop what you are doing and take a look in the mirror.  What message are your lips sending?  Now that you know what can be done, what are you waiting for?

Millie has a Hull Lotta Love for SkinCeuticals Antioxidant Lip Repair

This emollient lip treatment helps improve environmental damage while smoothing away and refining the lips surface. It is perfect for anyone seeking relief from dry/tight lips or those just looking to replenish and rejuvenate lip tissue.

SkinCeuticals Antioxidant Lip Repair contains Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that revitalizes the lips. It also includes in its ingredients Hyaluronic Acid which draws water and moisture to the lips. This helps with deep lines for fuller, healthier, more youthful lips.

Susie has a Hull Lotta Love for SkinMedica Total Defense and Repair (TDR)

So many people ask me if I could recommend one skin care product, what would it be?  I tell them SkinMedica Total Defense and Repair.  Why you ask?  Because, at the bare minimum, everyone needs to wear a sunscreen.  But TDR is so much more than just a sunscreen; it’s a rejuvenating superscreen, powered by SOL-IR™ Advanced Antioxidant Complex.  Many sunscreens are broad-spectrum, protecting against UVA and UVB. TDR also protects against infra-red rays.  In addition, it is clinically tested to help rejuvenate skin and improve the overall appearance of skin because it has antioxidant properties as well.  While it is great for the person who doesn't mind adding on to the steps of their current skin care regime, it's even better for the person who is younger and looking to prevent damage, as well as the person who doesn't like multiple steps in a skin care regime.   What could make this product even better? The price point. TDR is only $65 for such a powerful, stand alone product, which makes it affordable for any budget.  And all my patients know, I like to save them money anytime I can!

I like to apply mine with a bb/cc cream brush.  Purchase your TDR in February and receive a free makeup brush with your purchase.
